Hello Diesel fans,

Finally after a couple of tryouts i was able to acheive what i wanted out of my 1.9TD on a low budget (because its my winter beaturrr)

Here is what's the story:

1- Installed Gauge pod and VDO boost gauge:
COST ~ 50$ for both
Time ~ 1hr

2- Increased fueling and tuned the fuel pump
read thread http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=497 to see how to adjust fueling.
COST 0$
Time ~ 20min

3- Installed a valve to control boost before the wastegate
(note the little hole which serves as a bleed of air because the wastegate is not an accessory which consumes air. Be very careful, if you only install a valve, the wastegate will still get the full pressure reading because its not a device which consumes pressure it just reads it. This is why the pressure has to have a way to escape)

COST = 19.99$ (paint gun valve with turnknob) for the valve, 5$ for the fittings, 2$ for hose 1/4 diesel
Time = 1hr

4- Free flow air filter, getting rid of the stock airbox
More PSI from the turbo requires more air from the stock airbox which is why i got rid of it because the paper filters get dirty so fast. It is an efficient airbox however, dont be fooled but a conic filter like the one i have installed has better airflow at all times.

COST ~ 30$
Time ~ 10 min

And the results, the car's power and all in all response has been increased by half, i get a bit more black smoke on low rpms before the turbo spools up but it is because the mixture is too rich and there isnt enough air yet in the combustion chambers. No smoke when turbo is at normal boost. Im currently running 15PSI max boost because my engine is not new (410 000km) and never been rebuilt. Running Fully synthetic german oil 5w40 to ensure optimal lubrication. Noticed clutch slips due to increase of power. My clutch is still good but sometimes it just cant keep up with the extra torque.

Overall this is the cheapest project i ever undertook where the results overweigh the costs. Simply amazing
To all who want to do this to their diesels, there are no dangers to the mechanics whatsoever if you keep boost under 15 psi and you might actually get better fuel economy because you step on the gas more lightly (car moves faster). I will post fuel economy results when i empty my tank by the end of the week

Stock Fuel consumption 8.25L/100 with somewhat 50% city/agressive driving and 50% highway.

Even if fuel economy is higher with my mods, i will not revert back, it just feels good having a car with such a small engine acheive gasoline counterparts performance.

Great posts. I wish we had more like this!

Nice write up!!! This should be categorized as informative.

bienvenu dans le club dude, mais ta encore des croutes a manger pour nous rejoindre moi pis x@v :p ;)

P.S. BOOST PIN, BOOST PIN BOOST PIN, BOOST PIN BOOST PIN, BOOST PIN BOOST PIN, BOOST PIN BOOST PIN, BOOST PIN BOOST PIN, BOOST PIN BOOST PIN, BOOST PIN

:dunno:

So, just as promissed, the first week test results from the new mods.
New city/highway fuel consumption is just close to 9L/100 but im sure i drove the car harder than when previous fuel economy was calculated (before mods) i sometimes hit speeds of 150km/h on the highway (not very fuel efficient) also noticed less oil consumption trough oil breather due to low restriction air intake.

Good results so far :D Will keep updating
