i did it on other cars but no volks yet
any special tools needed,
any tips on how to would be appreciated
thanks

You need an 8mm triple square bit to remove the axles. You can buy one at NAPA for $3. You will also need for the flywheel bolts. It is a relatively easy job, the 020 is small and comes out with having to remove the subframe.

30mm socket for the cv's
I think its a 12 point torx style key for the 6 bolts on each driveshaft
depending onhow tight the tranny is you might need to remove a couple things just to lower it.

thanks alot for the info guys
is there a write up some where on vw forums on how to do it step by step
i searched around but did not find anything

Steps:

disconnect and remove battery
support the weight of the engine
remove starter
remove speed sensor, reverse light, main ground
remove the clutch cable
unblot shift linkage
unbolt axels
unbolt the bolts connecting the transmission to the block, remove the top center one last
remove transmission mount
with a helper undo the last bolt, and wiggle the transmission sideways towards the drivers side, the main shaft should come off the clutch
remove transmission

The 020 is not that heavy and relatively small compared to other VW transmissions. If you are looking for a challenge remove an auto transmission.
