Never heard any major problems with the 4.2 cept maybe the 9 hr job it takes to change the starter.. oye.

If you wanna do a little research here's the "VW Bible" site: vwvortex.com

i scan cars for little dealer lots on the side (code clearing mostly) and i scanned one, it had codes in EVERY SINGLE module. it looked like a ok car from the outside.... i wouldnt that car used, parts are practicly impossible to find in a scrap yard. just my experiance with one

90% of the time that I get this at work, there's 2 inches of water under the carpet creating shorts in every possible module. I think this is a case by case thing, not typical.

ive had a inch of water all over the floor of my old vr, and our 99 regal is constantly taking water, never popped a code. the car had MANY codes

heres a few ( i save all the codes before deleting)
engine
18032
16826
tranny
17114
17087
airbag
00532

it goes on and on and on, i wouldnt buy a used a8, u know u wont be able to sell it later on anyways. anyways just my opinion.

I've had water in the passat and saab in the past, it's just a sunroof drain line that came off, or the condenser drain lines for the A/C. A8's are pretty solid though.

That's why I said 90% of the time. Although the regal is surprising, the SDM is under the passenger seat, but anyway, this is off topic.

G'luck with the search Ben.
