We just changed tires to winters, and a day after that, as I was driving down the road, I hear a ticking noise coming from the driver wheel, and instability when driving (shaky). I check the lugs, see if they're all tight ... one of them seems pretty weak, so I tighten it some more ... I go 2 more turns , until the lug snaps iun half ! So I limp back home on 3 lugs instead of 4, and we go to canadian tire and get this fixed. Get the car back, and it's silent again ... for a bit.
Yesterday night, I drive, and I hear the noise again, as if the lugs were loose again. Well it wasn't coming from the wheel, cuz if I decoupled the engine from the tranny, it wouldn't make any sound. When it was coupled though, it was a sort of ticking, continuous, like a metal part repeatedly hitting on something. Also, when the car was left coasting while coupled, it would shake real bad, like if the load coming from the engine wasn't even. When changing gears, it would jerk a little, be it up or down, matched or not. This happened in any gear.
When I got back home, I got off and checked underneath the car to see if the drive axle was good : I thought maybe the inner CV joint on the driver side might have gone. I look, and the boots and the shaft are looking great : no leaks, no holes, nothing. I look further down, and see some oil on the transmission casing, right next to the drive flange. Right now, I think I have a leak somewhere in the differential, but I'm not sure exactly. The automatic tranny we had before had a screwed up differential that kept making knocking noises similar to what we're hearing now, so I'm thinking the cause is similar.
Anybody know for sure what could cause this ? Nobody could diagnose the auto's problems correctly or localize the noise, so I hope it'll be easier with a manual ....
