Cheapest Off-Roader for starters?

Whats the cheapest and most reliable SUV or pick up for off roading? something not too old (no more than 10 years old)

Something thats good for a start. Someone actually suggested a Chevy Tracker/Suzuki Sidekick because..well....its cheap, easy to fix.
 
Samis and Toys are awesome - the 22r is a torque monster and good on gas too. Only problem is finding one with a good frame (all the bodies are rotten anyway). Last solid front axle Toy was sold here in '85 - the first year that EFI was offered in the 22REC, also available in xtra cab, fourrunner and regular cab. Bonus points if you can find a turbo diesel. I will bet money that the frame on anything that old is weaker than wet spaghetti - they are fully boxed, and fill with crud and rot from the inside out. Check out a Jeep Cherokee - they were sold for nearly 20 years, pretty solid with unit body, solid front axle, 4.0 powerplant is bombproof, and the aftermarket is greater and more affordable than the Japanese stuff (sadly). They are also practical daily drivers, and more stable in stock form than any Suzuki. Avoid the older models with the GM 2.8 V6...and bonus points if you land the old turbodiesel!
 
a good ol' jeep cherokee... The XJ's can be found pretty easily for little money... with a 3" lift (cheap!) and 31" tires, you'd be suprised at what it can do.

parts are easy to find and CHEEEAAAAAPPPP...... lots of aftermarket parts available too.
 
i know its a Big British POS, but what about a Land Rover Discovery (for off-road use only) No dependancy for street use.

Pourquoi ? Si t'es assez intelligent pour entretenir une auto régulièrement et de la bonne facon (les Land Rover c'est un peu différent) t'auras pas de problème ! c'est pas fiable comme une civic mais ca peu en prendre

Puis un Discovery a un super potentiel si tu veux faire du off road, il y a beaucoup d'aftermarket aux US.

pieces pas disponibles et cheres, aftermarket dur a trouver ici et tres dispendieux... pas tous les mécanos qui connaissent la mécanique du L R, etc...

c'est pas necessairement une cochonnerie, mais loins une solution pratique et économique de choix...

Un cherokee ou un cj, tout le monde peux réparer ca... un master cylindre ca vaut 26$, les calipers valent 30$, une aile neuve ca vaut 40$, des shocks pour ca c'est pas cher, etc...
 
The land rovers have the advantage over other trucks because of the stock suspention set up.. if you're going to upgrade it wouldnt matter... but i've heard of good things from the land rover for off road use.

i've owned a sidekick and tracker, they were both under 150$ and fun as ****ING HELL. when you pay that little for an off roader, you make SURE to beat the living shit out of it.. if it wasnt for the jump i hit over 10 times and the gas tank falling off, it would have kept going..

effectivement si tu es cave et que tu ne sais pas te drébouiller .....

C'est plein de shop spécialisées Land Rover dans le nord de New York (1h30 de Montreal), tu ne vas pas au dealer pour acheter tes pieces parce que tu vas te faire exploité à chaque fois ....

et ...
mécanique (moteur) de Land Rover = GM
transmission ZF (commun sur les autos euro)
système électrique assez simple
suspension et frein plus compliqué mais "standard"

Mais j'avoue que un jeep c'est moins chere à réparer ... En passant, les jeep en Europe ont la meme réputation que les Land Rover au Québec ... bizzare ...

aller aux états unis pour trouver une shop spécialisée, c'Est pas la solution la plus simple et économique tant qu'a moi, non? c'est pourtant ce que l'auteur du thread recherche...

comme n'importe quel char... dealer c'est juste pour leur pieces pas trouvable quand t'es dans le trouble.

c'est juste ca que j'ai dit tantot... j'ai pas dit que stune grosse cochonnerie a éviter a tout prix. c'est juste moins commun et plus cher a réparer, c'est tout. l'aftermarket est aussi bcp moins disponible et plus cher.

le gars cherche "Cheapest Off-Roader for starters", d'apres moi le land rover réponds pas a ca. monte pas sur tes grands chevaux.

le jeep a cette réputation en europe c'est tres normal... c'est un véhicule amériacain donc eux ont moins de pieces, moins commun, etc...

t'as un land rover danny?
 
on m'a recommender un samourai, ou sidekick, qqchose avec empattement tres court si tu veux faire du off road. comme ca cest tres rare que le frame va accotter le sol quand tu pogne une crete, roche... ex: /\
