Mk4 jetta with new battery (1 month old) 2.0 8 valve automatic.
problem is when you first start to crank it seems like the battery is low or dying because the trip mileage gets erased and digital odometer goes blank while it turns slow and hard.

once started all is fine?
i haven't really checked it out but suspect it could be the ignition switch at the lock cylinder.

cough cough Jack got a lemon cough cough :p

Jack i really think its time to sell that Jetta and give the problems to someone else ,but i have this feeling that if u sell it the other owner will have no problems with the car :D

took some time this morning to check the problem.
seems that the new battery's voltage is low.
will chage it up tomorrow and see if there is any constant drain somewhere.r

maybe your alternator isn't doing the job or there's a short somewhere.... :dunno:

when the car starts the voltage shoots up to 14.5
so i know the alternator is not the problem.
i need to test to see if there is any noticeable current being drawn with the car off.

sounds like it might be a couple of things; bad ground, starter pulling too many amps or just a bad battery. Try to look at the ground first since its the cheapest fix!

Check the terminals at the starter, make sure there's no corrosion or oxidization. And as mentioned above, GROUNDS!!!

Thanks for the reply Dan,
Starter was replaced during the winter because it would not disengage after it started and battery was replaced in Feb this year.
So I will look and clean up the ground connections.
