Ok, here we go again!

I have nothing to do until September so I've been looking for a job and figured I'd try my hand at waitering. I've been looking around, but it's hard to find a place to start when you have no experience, and right now it's kind of slow anyways. I got a job offer from the airport for a host or bartender, but they said it was a few months until the new restaurant opened. (Houston's)

But when the girl there told me about bartending, it clicked....I've always thought it was an awesome job part time job and since I saw the movie "He's just not that into you", I've wanted to own a bar. lol

Anyways, so I went to dinner with my buddy last night and our girlfriends and he told me he was going to take his bartending course last year, but ended up getting a good city job so he forgot about it, but he said it was a decent deal.

It's night courses for like 2-3 weeks and then you can get a job in some little bar or something. I'm not sure what the name of the school is, he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

Anyone know anything about the different places that offer this? Are these places legit? Do they help you get a job after? Is it recognized if I go to Ontario or the US to work?

Anyone have any advice? I always appreciate MR advice, honestly I do!

THANKS!!!

Honestly.... why? So many other random jobs that would be more fun

working as a bartender = $
my friend does over 20$/h, and he's only 20 yo

Answer the question?? lol

Seriously, I don't know other jobs I can do right now that will bring me similar money.

The only thing that compares was working as a valet, averaged out around 15-16$ an hour, no tax, but I'm sick of working outside when it's cold or wet, really shitty. 1 year of that is enough. lol

It's either waiter or bartender for the money. Everything else is like working at tim horton's, canadian tire, clothing store, best buy, etc. I've done my share of 9$/hour, I'm done.

I have plenty of ideas to make money on the side, but I need time to get started, but to start something, you need some money, so I need a job. lol

Ok, well St-Hub hires people with no experience, but the money isn't all that great and you need to start out as a greeter for a month or two I think...

If you only make 20 bucks an hour bartending you're at the wrong place. Apply at restaurants and let them know you want to be a waiter/bartender, they'll start by making you work as a bus boy and if youre good enough youll become waiter/bartender. But it usually takes a few months before you get the good shifts and make good money.

The warehouse at the company I work for pays $18/hr .... just opening boxes and restocking the distribution lines. Good clean environement and a reputable well-known company. Let me know if your interested, I'll give you the details. Although to start you'd probably end up on night shift/on-call. Though there is a night premium.

who bought u that 240sx?

Thanks, but seems a little mind numbing.....sorry.

There is no better job for a student than the restaurant indsutry.

Being a Waiter or Bartender will bring in $$ quicker than any hourly rate job.

Tips are simply incomparable to any warehouse, retail, sales or desk job. I've been though it and even with my career started I make less money now than I did in the restaurant business.

Thanks Wicked, that's what I was thinking.

Anyways, I found a place to take my class, it's cheap and quick. I'll take the class, get a job and if I like it, I'll take this other class at this place that looks really awesome, but pricey.

find a job in a busy restaurant.
it doesnt have to be an upscale one, as long as its busy and they flip tables often enough.

Lunches are usually a decent place to make good money for the amount of work/hours you are going to do. Most waiters I know will make anywhere from $60 - $120 per lunch service.
Keep in mind sure $60 is not a lot of money, but this is a 2hr shift we are talking about here.

11:30 - 1:30pm and they are Done! Thats $30/hr.

Then they usually go back for their dinner service and make another $80-$150 in 4hrs - 5hrs.
I personally find it a very fun job as well because u get to meet and joke around with a whole slew of new people u would never have met otherwise. Although the job can be stressful at times, the restaurant industry is usually always full of amazing stories.

Give it a go... I truely miss it!

Been working in restaurants for five and a half years. It's been a blast and the money has been amazing.

I don't want to get you down before you even start, but if you have no experience at all it will take you a little while before you start to make any good money unless you get really lucky or are VERY good. You're gonna have to start as a busboy and at least learn the ropes before you start getting your own tables. The good news is that you'll make decent money in the meantime until you're ready to move up.

In terms of bartending, I really don't think there would be any money in it for you. You either have to be a girl or work in a very high end/high volume place and know a lot of your clients.

There are Chinese waiters in non-Chinese restaurants, why can't a white guy be a waiter in a Chinese restaurant? lol
