had anybody else gotten this? i turned on my computer after work yesterday and got a pop up in my system tray saying to validate windows. i googled it before doing anything in case it was a virus oe soemthing and everyting checks out. when i went to validate i got this message

Windows Validation Error
A problem has been encountered during the Windows Genuine Advantage validation process.

To resolve this:

Log into your computer with a user account with Administrator privileges.
Delete the data.dat file from C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data (the drive letter will depend on where the OS was installed) to complete the validation process.
Note: Your system may have Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications installed. If notification messages still occur after successful validation, you may follow the steps below to reset the notifications.

Click Start, and then select Run. The Run dialog box opens.
Type wgatray.exe /b in the Open field, and then click OK
Restart the computer to remove non-genuine notifications

i deleted the .dat file and tried to re-validate and i get the same thing and the file comes back. i called pc info where i got my computer fixed last year (they re-loaded windows on it) and they said that it's most likely a virus but all my research says otherwise. any tech guys got any advice here?

Had that too. try googling windows genuine regedit, I had to edit something in regedit (Vista though)

thanks man. didn't work though. i got a message saying i have a blocked vlk.

found this describing it

A "Blocked VLK" is a Volume License Key that is valid, but was licensed solely to a corporation or larger enterprise/business. Blocked VLK's are Product Keys that Microsoft has received consent from the original owner to block usage of. A VL Product Key is non-transferrable to individuals. In order to resolve your non-genuine licensing issue, please visit: Genuine Microsoft Software and click on "Validate Windows". When validation fails, you'll see a button to click on which will provide information on how to acquire a WGA Kit.

you think i got screwed by the guy that re-installed windows?
