I'm looking into getting an DSLR. I'm a beginner so keep that in mind :p
Best bang for the buck? PQ, durability etc etc.

thx!

its like asking which is better between honda and toyota. 2 very reputable brands putting out very similar products. in the same product level between both companies you will find slight differences, personally i'm a canon guy.

I've read some reviews online about both cameras and one thing that seems to come up is the quality of the lens on the Canon.
Is it something I should be concerned about?

the kit lens is fine...
You will see the difference in sharpnest if you try other (more expansive) lenses and when you try something better, you can tell that the quality of the kit lens is poor !

D40 bar none !

Don't even consider the more expensive D-60 or D-80, a waste of money and takes worse pictures !

Canon has a wider lens selection, but Nikon has better optics, it is all in the colours !

Leica and Nikon are on the top of the food chain, but within the last 25 years, Nikon is top !

the lens that comes in the kit should be considered just a starter kit, to let you get the feel of the camera, experiment with its options etc. once you know your camera, upgrade lenses. but be careful, once you start its very very hard to stop!

Je te dirais canon. Mais je suis vendu canon alors c'est normal
J'ai essayé quelque fois des nikon, maudit criss que c'est compliquer pour rien.

well, the D40 has a slightly bigger sensor than the XT, it also has a nicer screen, better metering, better white balance presets, a nice picture control thingie. the nikon kit less is a bit wider, since the sensor has a 1.5X crop versus 1.6X for the canon, the lens is also a bit tougher, better made, the autofocus is plenty fast and minimum focussing distance. The handling on the canon is also a bit sluggish and the menu looks like cr@p. The only thing that I feel canon has a bit better, is that the AF will work on all canon lenses ever made(that ha AF capabilities), where as the nikons is only compatible with newer AF-S lenses, that means some of the jewels from nikon, such as some prime lenses will not autofocus.

so me thinks you should go for the D40, but between me and you, I would wait a bit since the D40 is the oldest camera in nikon's book so far, except the F6. Try to get a D60 instead.

or get my hasselblad

youtube vid or lies.

What kind of shooting do you want to do? What kind of support do you want?
Canon has more lenses available, there is a fantastic online community.

Nikon does have better flashes. Their colors are also a little better straight out of the camera.

I had an XT and it was a great camera, the main reason I sold it was to get a bigger sensor as I needed to get wider shots.

si tu as deja fais de la photo avec un appareil argentique cest 100 fois plus simple de faire du numerique avec un nikon quavec un canon...cest une des raison pour laquel jai choisie nikon *tu*

I'm hoping to buy a 20D second hand some time soon! After looking through the photography thread, I liked what everyone had to say about it.

look man, i bought a 500$ (200 off) canon, and i find the pics all to be blurry nomatter what. im going to try another lens and see if that fixes the problem. ill let you know. but from what it looks like the lens is garbage.

make sure your auto focus is set to "on". if thats already the case, set to manual focus and try a few.
