i have a little problem with my car.

my oil got a little low (i know i know, flame all you want i ****ed up), it was below the low line, but still enough that it showed on the dip stick and there was no oil light on in the car.

when i started it earlier today it had some trouble, turned over a few times then very slowly came to idle

then from work tonight i started it and it sounded completely different from when it normally starts

now it keeps starting with this new sound and when i am driving, at any idle state under 3000rpm it makes a constant ticking sound, almost like something is bouncing around inside the engine.

i figure it could be a fin from the starter has broken and is bouncing around inside the engine, or could it be a vavle? lifter? something head related?

i say it only makes that sound under 3000, because after that the engine and exhaust are too loud to hear it, but it could still be making the noise

:(

there may be a possibility that the timing chain in noisy, hitting the guide on the head, may be valves, but if u say it goes away after 3000 and dosnt get louder, then it may not be the valves, i say its your chain because if you rev over 3000, there is sufficient oil pressure to feed the tensionner to remove the slack from the chain, so check the tensionner, but it would be best to have a mechanic see it first to see where the noise is acctually comming from. if its comming from the tranmission bell housing, its definetly not the timing chain!

thank you for the reply, im going to get my dad to look at it, im pretty sure the noise isnt coming from the timing chain, thats at the front of engine (front of car) and the sound sounds like its coming from the back

it's a lifter...just put more oil and a can of barholl ( not sure of the spelling) thinks just run smoth after

i searched around my engine bay and components for an hour with a very high power stethascope, the sound seems to be coming from my bell housing of the transmission, its a very loud clattery noise, almost sounds like a piece of metal is flying in circles around the inside of a tube.
it is not my exhaust, it is not my valves/lifter or such
i can hear it from the injectors, however it is MUCH louder at the bell housing, it almost echoes through the whole engine.

any ideas what it could be?
my dad thinks it might be the clutch release bearing.

possible that its the bearing, if the noise goes away when you press the clutch, then it may be the bearing, if u want , pass by Camo, ill take a look at it.

to Haig and the others who helped out, i found out today what the problem is related to. its something to do with my starter and flywheel, because the car no longer starts, so its stuck in a parking lot  and i cant go get it until my dad finishes work

those f*ckers at cacatire are gonna pay for giving me a starter that crapped out in only 3 months!

try hitting the starter with a hammer not too hard.... it worked for me once or twice when I was stuck somewhere!! You should have bought it at Nissan ;)

the reason i didnt buy it at nissan was to save over 400$

the canadian tire are usually made by bosch, i guess this one wasnt

a hammer wont help. the starter motor spins like mad (sounds like a turbo), except it wont engage with the engine
the sound i have been hearing (the chattering) must either be teeth from the starter or flywheel bouncing around inside the bellhousing

this is going to be a ****ed up problem to fix!!
so much for doing anything this weekend, all im going to see is the bottom of my car (guess thats not all bad)

If you need any parts or any advise send me a PM Steve i'm gonna be swapping my KA in my new 89 240sx, so extra parts to give away!

Hope you have a long extension and some flex sockets , cuz you are going to need them to get that Starter out ..

The first bolt is easy , but the second one is a Biatch to get to .. Did one not that long ago at work , still did it in 15 mins , but it took some bending ..
Good Luck !

i just put it in in august, the second one was harder to get to, but extensions dont fit up there, i had to use the smallest ratchet i had, kind tight on arm space... anyway

turns out the starter broke into many pieces (nose cone and gears) all over the bellhousing, tranny is off and so was flywheel and clutch. im going to get a new clutch while its off, might as well change it, its close to needing it.

im going to cacatire tomorrow to get them to refund me or get me a new starter.
