DETROIT – Chevrolet today announced the return of a V-8 powered, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan to the U.S. lineup, the Chevrolet SS. The SS will also be Chevrolet’s next NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar and will debut in its race configuration at the 2013 Daytona 500.

The limited production version of the Chevrolet SS will be a 2014 model and will arrive in dealer showrooms in late 2013. It is the first time in 17 years that Chevrolet will offer a rear-wheel-drive sedan for sale in the United States.

Chevrolet has a long history of using the SS (Super Sport) designation on high-performance models of some of its most enduring nameplates. The SS designation first appeared in 1957 on a Corvette prototype race car built under the guidance of Zora Arkus-Duntov with the plan to enter it in the Le Mans 24-hour race.

The first production vehicle offered with an SS option was the 1961 Impala – 453 were built with the performance upgrades which included a modified chassis and suspension, power brakes, a steering column mounted tachometer and unique wheels and tires. The latest SS model in the Chevrolet lineup is the fifth-generation Camaro, which debuted in 2010.

The Chevrolet SS will be a derivative of the award-winning global rear-wheel-drive architecture that spawns performance vehicles like Chevrolet Camaro and Holden’s upcoming VF Commodore. The much anticipated Australian-built car will benefit from significant technology advances which enhance overall performance.

“As a passionate race fan and performance enthusiast, I am thrilled that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR racecar in the SS that is closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. “The Chevrolet SS is a great example of how GM is able to leverage its global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience that extends beyond the track. I am personally looking forward to driving it.”

Chevrolet was America’s best-selling performance car brand in 2011 with Camaro and Corvette accounting for one out of every three sports cars sold in the United States. The addition of the SS should strengthen Chevrolet’s position as a leading performance brand.

Its passage may be assured when city council meets in special session on Friday, but a controversial bylaw that would ban masks at public demonstrations and require march organizers to provide authorities with a route for their event has already been rejected outright by one of Montreal’s the two municipal opposition parties.

“When it comes to these reviled vandals (who cause damage during demonstrations), police already have in existing laws all that’s needed to assumed their responsibilities as police and execute arrests,” Projet Montréal leader Richard Bergeron told reporters Wednesday afternoon. “In the light of what we’ve heard today ... Mayor Gérald Tremblay and Vision Montreal leader Louise Harel must withdraw this bylaw and cancel it.

“I always had my doubts about (the bylaw) ... my caucus and I are unanimous ... this is not the measure that should be taken in the hyper-emotional context in which we find ourselves.”

The bylaw in question would make it illegal for a mask to be worn at a public demonstration “without a valid reason” and could see marches cancelled if those in charge of them fail to provide police with a route.

Tremblay had announced in March that regulations that would better control demonstrations would be studied. The announcement came in the wake of the annual anti-police brutality march that saw more than 200 people arrested, several stores on Ste. Catherine St. damaged and a police squad car overturned and trashed.

It seemed at first the bylaw would not be voted on until the middle of June.

But when a series of smoke bombs were detonated in the métro last week, Tremblay announced the bylaw would be tabled and adopted by this Friday.

Bergeron made his comments as an afternoon of public comment on the law was held at city hall — two days after Vision Montreal convinced the Tremblay administration to hold them and 48 hours before the bylaw is scheduled to be adopted at a special meeting of council.

The nearly two dozen briefs submitted to the city’s public security committee were nearly unanimous in their condemnation of the bylaw in its present form.

Ligue des droits du Québec officials described the proposed bylaw as both “useless” and “dangerous” and told the commission that police already had sufficient powers to deal with agitators and vandals during public demonstrations.

Other presentations called upon Montreal police to do more to identify and arrest troublemakers during demonstrations.

Despite Projet Montréal’s opposition, Tremblay’s Union Montreal party possesses a comfortable majority in city council and could pass the bylaw even without the support of Vision Montreal.

I wonder if the same thing will happen in Ottawa when Harper tries to put a similar law into effect.

Robert Gene White Dies During Lap Dance

Robert Gene White, a 67-year-old man, received several lap dances at a Texas strip club Friday night, and when it came time to pay, workers found him unresponsive, KVIA reported.

A manager of the Red Parrot in El Paso says employees tried to perform CPR on him, but were unsuccessful.

KTSM reported that White suffered a heart attack while being entertained by the dancers.

El Paso Sheriff's deputies told the station that there were no immediate signs of foul play, but the investigation is still open.

Are English Canadians on the verge of kicking Quebec out of the Confederation?

The person responsible for the National Post opinion editorial must have been flabbergasted at readers’ responses to this issue in the last few days. More than 60% of the paper’s respondents said it was time to let Quebec go.

Even if the survey has no scientific grounds and covers a very small sample, the results show the malaise that currently exists in the country. While the separatist option is becoming less popular in Quebec, it surprisingly seems to be gaining popularity in the rest of Canada.

There might never be a referendum in Canada asking voters if they want Quebec to go, but in the current context there won’t be another love-in like the one organized in Montreal in 1995 to keep Quebec in at all costs.

Although we live in the same house, we certainly don’t sleep in the same room anymore. Our romantic days are long gone. Quebec and the rest of Canada have grown apart. Young Quebecers have no appetite for constitutional quarrels, although they define themselves more and more as Quebecois and less and less as Canadians. They have even invented the word “decanadianization.”

Conversely, English-Canadians are becoming more and more fed up with paying for Quebec, which receives more than half the money given through the so-called equalization program, the equivalent of $8 billion a year.

The solution might not be to ask Quebec to become an independent nation but to become less dependent on its neighbours and more fiscally autonomous. To calm English Canada down, the equalization formula — which will be reviewed before 2014 anyway — could be modernized.

Canada has evolved over the years. The need for interprovincial welfare is not as necessary as it used to be. The principle of redistribution is part of our Constitution but could focus exclusively on funding very essential social programs, which wouldn’t include $7-a-day daycare or a fully subsidized year of parental leave after the birth of each child.

On the other hand, to appease Quebec, the federal government needs to give it as much autonomy as possible. Stephen Harper has been very good at not exacerbating the tensions between the two solitudes. His decentralist approach makes the slow estrangement less painful.

Quebecers do not like radical changes. Our revolution half a century ago was “quiet.”

Will our separation from Canada also be “quiet?” Or do we simply need some distance so we can better figure out our true feelings?

We’ll see.

Anyway, the real question for now should be: Is there an alternative? The federal Liberals’ attempt to centralize the federation was a fiasco. It almost led to the breakup of the country 17 years ago and gave us a bankrupt welfare state.

We should salute this new refusal by English-Canadians to compete with the separatists to buy Quebecers’ votes.

If Canada is to survive, it needs to come from our willingness to stay together. Period.
