Article: BMW E92 M3 detail

Watching the car change was pretty cool. Water based paint is crap, better for the environment, but looks like a cheap paint job.

For such a car like this new M3. How did it get these "orange peel ridges"?

Orange peeling is a fact of life today with new fast drying low solvent paints that dry within 2 minutes and using HVLP(High Volume Low Pressure) spray equipment. In the old days, high end German brands like MB and BMW would spend a good amount of time polishing the paint flat before it is out of the factory, but with the high amount of car owners leasing their cars and couldn't careless, they have forgone this extra step altogether. The Japanese on the other end for their high end cars like Lexus use a quicker approach by using a fine abrasive to flatten the horizontal plane panels like the hood, roof and trunk to match the duller side panels instead of the time consuming method of polishing the hood, roof and trunk, 99.9% of the consumer would not notice the difference anyways.
