Small car that's fun to drive?

Tested, in the running:
Mini Cooper (non-s) - Great ergos, road feel and handling. Expensive.
Focus - Really nice car but feels top-heavy. OK but not so much fun. Maybe better with sport suspension?

Tested & Rejected:
2012 Accent 1.6 MT - Awful motor and throttle response, vague shifter, bad power steering, floaty disconnected suspension.
Veloster 1.6 AT - Awful motor and throttle response, bad power steering, tape-cul but bad handling suspension.
Mazda 2 MT - Good driving, nice motor, good handling, rejected due to bad ergonomics and claustrophobic feeling
2012 Civic Si - Too floaty, numb suspension and steering, motor not loud enough
N/A Chevy Sonic - Gutless motor, just like the Hyundai 1.6. Dangerously slow when taking off from a stop, comesa live at 4000rpm, a result of the ECU fucking with throttle opening (ignoring gas pedal input)


Rejects:
VW GTI - Too expensive
Mini Cooper S - Too expensive (but really good)
Mazda 3 - Rustbuckets, and retarded smiley face front bumper.

Yeah, definitely try the TDI Golf also since you mentioned you want torque many times.

I'd also keep on the list to be tested the Honda CR-Z and the Sonic LTZ (1.4 Turbo).

The TDI Gold and CR-Z will have the best MPG by far

Dans mon livre à moi, un nombre de HP et une cote de consommation ne font pas d'un moteur le meilleur de sa catégorie... La courbe de puissance, la "smoothness" du moteur, sa fiabilité à long terme bien sûr... combinés avec la puissance et la consommation, là, sa donne une bonne idée d'un moteur.

On a pas vraiment idée de la fiabilité du nouveau GDi de Hyundai et si je me fie aux autres moteurs Hyundai que j'ai eu l'occasion d'essayer, la smoothness c'est pas leur point fort. Aussi, de ce que j'ai pu comparer, la consommation est plus élevée que les véhicules concurrents (sur papier en tout cas). Je sais que le moteur est aussi plus puissant dans le cas de la nouvelle Accent, alors c'est "normal" que la consommation soit aussi plus élevée. Par contre, j'sais pas si c'est la faute des ratios de transmissions ou quoi, mais j'ai toujours eu l'impression que les moteurs Hyundai, malgré leur puissance supérieure, ne "tiraient" pas tant que ça...

Je ne dis pas que le 1.6 GDi n'est pas un bon moteur, je dis simplement qu'il ne faut pas juste s'attarder à sa puissance et plutôt voir ce qu'il en adviendra à long terme.
 
Je sais que tu recherches une voiture qui ne consomme pas beaucoup d'essence, mais si tu peux oublier ce critere un peu je crois que tu ne trouveras pas mieux pour une voiture presque neuve que ceci:

Offre 20 000$. Je ne serai pas surpris que le vendeur accepte etant donne que c'est une voiture dont la valeur deprecie enormement les 2 premieres annees.

Pour l'avoir conduite a plusieurs reprises, le ''steering feel'' est excellent.

Mais je le repete: oui je sais que la consommation n'est pas geniale....Mais pour le prix dans les voitures presques neuves en bas de 25 000$ tax incluses et qui offrent beaucoup de sensation de la route, je crois que la RX-8 est la championne.

I'd definitely look into an Rx8. love the whole coupe look with suicide doors, front engine, rwd, lsd, and looks like a blast to drive. definitely on my list as a next car.

Tout le monde a tellement peur de la fiabilité et de la consommation...
Mais avec 7000km, c'est sûr que c'est une bonne affaire.

Yes but what's 5$ more a week in gas if you can get a car that costs the same but is 10 times more fun to drive than an econobox?

Plus at 20 000$ the depreciation hit has been absorbed by the previous owner whereas if you buy a brand new econobox and flip it in 3-4 years you will lose a lot of money.

RX-8 has a sunroof, AC, Xenons, steering wheel mounted controls, more comfortable seats, better brakes and a ride that is very smooth and compliant over bumpy roads. Plus on the highway it's a very stable car at high speeds.

And to top it off the OP wants a car with great steering feel. There are very few brand new cars under 100 000$ that offer the same feedback through the steering wheel as an RX-8. I can think of Porsche, Lotus and a few other but that's it.
