Anybody know why they pulled the shoot just seconds before beating the freefall record? Was it to avoid splatting on earth?

I think its cause they were going primarily for speed so he ended up getting to the shoot deployment range quicker than Kettinger. Notice how little time he spent descending with the shoot.
 
Le parachutiste autrichien Felix Baumgartner a établi un record de vitesse en chute libre, devenant le premier homme à passer le mur du son à l'occasion du plus haut saut en chute libre jamais réalisé.

M. Baumgartner a atteint le mur du son en sautant en parachute à plus de 39 000 mètres.

L'Autrichien a quitté le sol de Roswell, dans l'État du Nouveau-Mexique, à 9 h 30 (11 h 30 heure normale de l'Est). L'ascension du ballon jusqu'à 36 000 mètres d'altitude, soit trois fois plus haut que l'altitude de vol d'un avion de ligne, a duré près de trois heures.

Prévue initialement lundi puis mardi, la tentative de saut a été annulée et déplacée à deux reprises en raison de vents forts.

Équipé de caméras, l'ancien parachutiste de l'armée, âgé de 43 ans, entend battre le record jusque-là détenu par Joe Kittinger en 1960 avec un saut de 31 kilomètres d'altitude. La vitesse de 988 km/h, soit Mach 0,9, atteinte par Kittinger, ne lui avait pas permis de passer le mur du son, soit Mach 1, à 1110 km/h.

i think there was another problem with his glass , he didnt know at what altitude exactly he was , i think that the one of the reasons to why he opened faster .
