Subject: URGENT ALERT: Environment Canada Threatens Leaded Fuel Ban on Competition Motor Vehicles

Environment Canada Threatens Leaded Fuel Ban on
Competition Motor Vehicles
Regulation Could Lead to Curtailment of Drag Racing Events

The Department of the Environment has issued a proposal to terminate the current exemption from environmental restrictions for leaded gasoline used in competition motor vehicles. If approved, the regulation would require a ban on vehicles using leaded fuel by Jan. 1, 2009 resulting in the likely demise of all drag racing competition in Canada.

We Urge You to Contact Environment Canada Immediately (Contact Information Below) to Voice Your Opposition to the Ban

Environment Canada relies on no scientifically documented test data that provides evidence that increased exposure to emissions created from leaded gasoline causes adverse health effects. In fact, there is no evidence that racing competitions result in increased exposure at all.

Competition motor vehicles use only 1.5% of all leaded gasoline consumed in Canada. The aviation industry, which owns a permanent exemption from the ban, accounts for the other 98.5%.

The U.S., U.K. and Australia have not seen the need to enact a similar ban. U.S. race teams, which constitute a significant majority of drag racers that compete in Canada, will not convert their vehicles to compete in Canadian events.

According to data compiled by the International Hot Rod Association, drag racing competitions and related expenditures by race teams, event organizers and tourists among others brings with it a multi-million dollar windfall for regions hosting these events.
Contact the Department of the Environment to voice your opposition to this proposed regulation. These comments are due before Feb. 13, 2008.

Also, please contact your Members of Parliament and ask that they oppose this ban as well. To identify your Members of Parliament, go to: http://canada.gc.ca/directories-repertoires/direct-eng.html#mp. Comments in opposition to the proposed ban on leaded fuel used in competition racing should be directed to:

Chief, Fuels Section
Oil, Gas and Alternative Energy Division
Energy and Transportation Directorate
Department of the Environment
Ottawa, Quebec K1A 0H3

All comments must cite the Canada Gazette, Part I, and the date of publication of the “Gasoline Regulations – Competition Vehicle Exemption” notice issued by the Department (Dec. 22, 2007).

Please e-mail a copy of your message to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org

Thank you.

Now this would really suck... :(

ur really set on finding a good alternative

Yes.. for the first time yesterday, I had to pay 55.60$ of prenium for a full tank. Might not sound like much compared to other cars but I've never payed so much! :run:

And there's so many different alternatives.. heck, back in the 1920s cars were running on steam! Why wouldn't we be able to do now? it's not as if we really lack salt water on this planet...

other 98.5% of lead fuel is used by the aviation industry?

maybe true but there is only a very small percentage of planes that run on gasoline

steam

maybe they were running on steam, but the steam didn't create itself, something has to burn to heat up the water enough so it can become steam...and back then I'd assume it was coal, which is alot worse than gasoline...

We have nearly 100 years of technology to back us up.. Butanol, ethanol or even a little bit of gasoline to create the steam. As for winter, put some resistors here and there to make things melt before starting it, etc. You'd end up with a steam car doing 70mpg (wild example taken out my butt)

That car dates from so long ago. Haven't we really made any progress since? We could improve it in so many ways.

So your saying the Model T is exactly the same as an R8?
