Hi,

Looking to maybe get something along the lines of an SUV with 4x4.

-What are my options? how is maintenance? mileage?

here are my options from what i quickly observed for truck less tha 10-12k

-Explorer
-Jeep liberty
-Mazda tribute
-kia sportage?

what other choices do I have?

well, you're clearly in the 4 door, IFS market.

a kia is a piece of shit. no matter how you slice it.
mazda you have no low range transfer case, its more of a car
ford take your chances. some guysb love them some are riddled with issues.

the jeep isn't bad , IMHO ugly- but i'm an isuzu guy.

look for an 04 rodeo, get it for cheap... gear driven transfer case, 4:10 gears, non interference engine, nobody wants them, great online forums.

orrr.....

Xterra? or get a new 4dr jeep.4runners are good but waaaaaaaaaay too spendy for me

hey --- if you like the jeep liberty, there is a dealer on st jacques across from super c with a deisel version

So Isuzu? what problems are they known for? what can I expect in Maintenance?

I was looking at xterra too.

I think I just saw it on lease busters? was it champagne color? what problems do they have?

Well, if you talk to someone who doesn;t know isuzus they'll tell you that they're pieces of shit that rollover. I think differently.

in isuzu you got two choices the trooper and the rodeo. both are body on frame (fully boxed frame too way better than most trucks) both had a major design change in 98 (and are split 1st gen and 2nd gen over those years). old troopers from the late 80's built in japan can take an absolute shit kicking and keep going. Unbelieveable engineering and overengineering... newer models of the trooper you can fit 35's on with a $200 lift though. they're more boxy which i didn;t like but are overall a better offroader

Rodeos are the sexy bitch of the family, again older ones pre 97 were leaf sprung rear torsion bar front and came 31" tires stock, after 98 they had a coil sprung 4 link rear and a major body remake. also rack and pinion added in 98. at that point they are essentially a GM, being made in Indianna.

my favorite year for the rodeo is the 97, which had a slightly different version of the older body style, leaf sprung rear, but a newer interior more like the 98+ models.

the tire on the back is standard from th early 90's up to 99. in 2000 it became an option for under the body, which i think sucks

rodeos always had a dana 44 rear end, which in a jeep you gotta upgrade to get. limited slip is on about 90% of them (look for a code G80 on the firewall). the gearing is a nice 4:10 for auto, 4:30 for stick, not shitty higher gears which are a nice match for the 6 cyl.

the engine burns oil. this is a pain in the ass but somehing i am uised to. they reengineered the engine in 02 i think to stop the oil consumption, i know a guy who got one rebuilt under warranty 2 mos after he bought his 02. it should be a recall but the company doesn; exist here anymore.

the fuel guage will go out on all the 98+ eventually. i haven't had one for 3 years.

if you keep the tires stock you can get 550-600 a tank highway easy driving out of it, drive the piss out of it in the city and you'll get 350. i have noi clue now cause i have tires 5" over stock

also the sound system sucks. but they have great cupholders.

look on cardomain.com for some, they;re easy to lift, pimp, whatever.

you can get an 02 with less than 75,000 on it for under 10 grand. the price drops from there.

First question: what are you gonna do with the 4x4?

city driving, off road, going north fishing/hunting

everything rodeored says may be right, but it's only worthwhile fo an offroader .

A guy like you from pierrefond who ride a saab....I highly doubt you need the roughnest of an explorer(can be a very confy city runner though) or rodeo or any real 4x4 with offroad capacities.(low gear, lockers, fullgear transfercase, biffier axle,,,etc, etc)

So give us info on how you want to use it and maybe you'll get a better advice on what to buy!

100% correct. If you're only hauling kids, going fishing and buying a christmas tree that is a whole different story.

Toyota 4Runner or Rav4 are #1 in dependebility and offroad capability are well above average. If you can spring for a Land Cruiser theyre even better than Land Rovers. Dont buy a American or Korean. Exploders are all pieces of crap and Jeeps are not the best when it comes to fuel economy. a couple year old Toy 4Runner will last you twice as long as a new kia with a tempting warranty. Mazda is new to 4x4s go with a company which has experience, youre making a wise choice buying a 4x4 for the shitty Canadian winters. hope it helps

do you have a trailer ?? ski-doo, vtt ??? a boat to pull ???

like said before, why do you need a SUV ?? depending on what info you gonna give, from there we can give you some choices...

Outdoor use or more the city use ??

for the outdoor well i like suzuki grand vitara or for a big family the xl7, jeep liberty is good too

for city use, they are not 4x4 but AWD , the toyota Rav4 - honda CRV - subaru Forester would do the job for the price.

I'd go with a jeep liberty

My mother bought one about 1 or 2 months ago and I letteraly fell in love with it. yes it's harder on gas but damn it's a nice small truck. plenty of power, drives like a charm, nice tranny that you can switch from 2X4, part time 4X4, 4X4 high and low... comfortable, nice towing capacities and the price is rediculous.

she got hers for less then 10500$ tax in and it's a 2004, 8X XXX km, still under warranty at chrysler till the end of 2011, brand new winter tires + summer tires... what would you want more ?

personnaly I have a grand cherokee and LOVE it but I adore his liberty too. For my friends and I, it's a Jeep thing ! We almost all got cherokees, grand cherokees, tjs and libertys and we have more than fun !!

ah I forgot, the liberty is easy to work on and everything's easy of acces in the engine bay !

what? you're kidding, right?

the 4runner is good, but the Rav4 is more like a tall car than a 4x4/suv/truck... it is NOT a good off-road vehicle.

Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Get at least an '03 possibly with some extended warranty on stuff like the transfercase, tranny, transaxle. Not because they are not reliable but because you don't know where the previous owner took it, meaning how deep into the woods.

If you want more comfortable get an '07 or newer, they are very comfy but not as capable in the trails.

I've never had a Suzuki fail on me, had some since 1999. I even had a 1991 Sidekick for two years and I sold it last summer, it was still working great and it never let me down, not even in this kind of Siberian weather.

We've owned five in total, we still own two.

Sorry for the late replies guys...

Thanks again for all your great info's!
I guess I should give you a break down of what i will be using it for:

-I manage and run an electronics co. both wholesale and retail, which means local deliveries once in a while, so looking to haul light cargo most of the time within the city limits.

-also I did have a motorcycle that i sold recently but might buy another in near future, so I would like the option to haul it. (but that is irrelevant since bike (sport) are less than 600pds most of the time)

-I do go camping and what not but I dont think I ever will have time to get into "heavy" off-roading

-But my number 1 reason is I am sick of our climate and it only makes sense for me right now.
