I'd like to hear your thoughts about (one of) GM's most recent commercial's.

It's the one that goes on about how they are not going bankrupt and they feel optimistic about the future. They promise to start building more fuel efficient cars and such...

Do desperate times call for desperate measures?

They keep saying how great their future cars will be, but they only show them in the last frame of the ad. They show their normal car lineup the rest of the time.

I think its a little too early for that kind of commercial. At least get through the bankruptcy before talking about how thier already a better company

That much is obvious.

But another thing I noted in this commercial was that the Pontiac Logo was gone, and so was Hummer, Saturn and Saab. The survivors are Chevy, Caddy, Buick and GMC only. All this has been speculated at lenght here, but aside from Hummer Saturn and Saab, I don't remember seeing anything official about the demise of Pontiac. We need wonder no more, and Pontiac fanatics must be depressed...

However, 4 brands is still too much, IMO. They could have made due with only 2 - Chevy and Caddy. Just produce Buick badges to put on Chevies for China, since they like it so much, but there is no point for that here, nor is there a need for a separate brand for trucks - Ford has been doing without one since... well forever. Hasn't hurt them one bit in sales in the past, huh?

Will GM survive? I think so. But they are going to be a mere shadow of their former selves. I still can't get over how absolutely huge GM must have been at it's Zenith in the late 60s. They have been producing mostly shit (with some very infrequent spark of genius) for 40 years, yet only a year or so ago have they lost their #1 ranking. How the mighty have fallen...

Buick on top :p

Remember the average age of Buick drivers... this study is based on reported claims. Old people drive too damn slow to even know if there is a problem.

to survive the recession, they gotta start buying more "homemade" shit, ie american cars, hence the reason im kinda sensing american cars on the boom within the next 10-15 yrs and jap cars on the decent.... or maybe americans will finally catch up to everyone else on the quality and durability and style of their cars and trucks

You guys bring some very interesting points to the table.

I think they'll get through this but it's going to take a massive overhaul like they suggest in the commercial. This former juggernaut of a brand is going to have to cut down massively and dramatically restructure their habits.

If you look at it from the business point of view, it's encouraging to see that they haven't abandoned marketing in these tough times.

On a side note, I think it would be best to cut down to the Chevy and Cadillac brands.

I like Buicks, they are my prefer rentals especially if they are dark navy blue !

GM will be just another brand that sells and service stuff made overseas like the rest of them !

You guys are right, I guess. GM should keep Buick.

I mean, what better way to prepare for the future than with a brand that caters to geriatrics, people that are litterally a few short years away from death, or at least from having their licenses revoked (it's the same fro GM, it means they're not buying another car ever)...

I will tell you one thing, seniors have money, young punks like those here on MR do not !

hmmm... goes to show Asians love Buick for some reason.

I just hope they scale down the amount of models they release in NA. they need on focus on the credibility.
