*note I only put the "FUUUUUUUU" cause I figure it's all the new rage now.

anyways back on track:

A day we thought would never come is upon us as the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, whose members include all of the major Canadian telcos and their subsidiaries (including all new entrants other than DAVE Wireless), have agreed to a code of conduct that benefits not themselves but their customers. Just like in the US, Canadians will now be able to walk away from their contracts penalty free if a carrier makes material changes to the terms of the contract. If the customer doesn’t wish to leave their carrier, he or she will have the option of staying on board at a grandfathered rate. Other new rules state that charges and contracts must be more clearly explained, privacy must be more fiercely protected (remember a few years ago when hundreds of pages of Rogers subscribers’ personal information were found in a dumpster?) and customer service must, well, be of service. All in all the new rules sound amazing, but only time will tell whether or not they actually have an impact on the Canadian wireless market.

So what does this mean for the average person?

I re-signed a 3 year contract with Rogers August 2008. Couple months ago I wanted the Iphone, went to a Rogers store and was told to come back in August so iv'e hit 1 year and am eligible.

Well, I went last week only to find out Rogers changed their upgrade policy to 2 years so I have to wait until Aug 2010 or pay the full price!

It means assuming you have signed a contract and the provider makes a price increase or change of plan / options you are eligible to cancel the contract and walk away with no fee.

It means nothing for you. This allows you to do exactly what the article says; walk penalty free if your contract changes. For example, if Rogers decides to start charging 15 cents per incoming text, you can cancel your contract.

ya but optional features that are "add ons" to your plan are not price protected... they are not part of the contract since they can be removed and added anytime

just as it is now... so i dont think they will be price protected and you wont be able to "walk away" if one of those gets increased...

thats why i dont see this as a big deal...

GOLD!
