Another Miami thread :run:

I'm traveling to Miami with my gf for the first 2 weeks of February (right before the Spring Break madness :run:).

Our plan so far looks like this:

- spend a few days in south beach
- drive the A1A (along the coast)
- drive to orlando and go to disney and maybe cape canaveral
- drive all the way to Key West and stay there a day or 2
- then back in miami we are renting a condo for the rest of the stay which is about a week

In Miami we plan to see:
- Little Havana
- Coral Gables
- Coconut Grove
- a cigar factory
- the Art Deco area
- the Everglades
- the beaches, of course :D

We had originally planned to take a boat to Bahamas and stay 2-3 days there. But there's only one cruise-line going to Bahamas and the reviews aren't great :( All the other ferries seem to be out of business. What's up with that? :dunno:

Am I missing anything obvious?

Any suggestions for restaurants in Miami, South Beach, Key West, Ft. Lauderdale?

What areas are to avoid besides Little Haiti and Liberty City?

What you have planned seems pretty complete. I have done pretty much all of it down there and I can assure you that it's definitely going to be a fun vacation!

Def. get a GPS and don't end up in weird ghettos because I have seen weird shit going down there loll...

BTW, Are you driving down there or flying?

Were did you shop for flights?

Best thing to do is book with Allegiant Air and drive to Plattsburgh airport (I think they also have another airline company now). The rates are super cheap and the parking at the airport is free. If you check their website often you can get deals as low as 60$ round trip to Florida but that doesn't happen often though. I would never go for more than 300$ round trip and that's on the high side.

Yeah well, people were telling me it's "really" cheap like 150$ round trip and every time I checked it was about 350$...

x2, my whole family does this.

2 summers ago I went for 160$ round trip and the week after I booked my tickets the same dates were 58$!!! I was kinda pissed..lol. But like Nadim said, you have to be very flexible with the dates and check often.

Yeah I guess but unfortunately I just can't leave on the spot, and my vacation dates are pretty much set in stone can't just move them around.... Oh the disadvantages of management jobs.

The Capital Grille in Miami! try this place, its owned by red lobster but its as good as rib n reef!! Really classy place, they even have a humidor where you can buy cigars. Amazing wine, and really great steak

Its also in the same building as bang brothers;D

I've driven through most of Florida (haven't been to the northwest yet). I love Florida!

Seems that you want to do a bit of everything and I'm assuming you're flying to Miami or Ft Lauderdale (?)

This is what I'd suggest:

If you plan to rent a condo in Miami (although honestly Miami did not impress me that much...it's ok but there's better beaches elsewhere (unless you're going for the girls, but that's not your case), South Beach night life is ok I guess) in the second week I'd do the road trip in the 1st one. Depending what you plan to do in Orlando, 1 week is enough but then again, doing all Orlando attractions properly would probably take 2-3 weeks by itself.

Day 1 - From Miami/Fort Lauderdale take the A1A north. Taking the A1A instead of the 95 is really long but worth the drive IMO. Spend the night in Cocoa Beach.
Day 2 - spend at Kennedy Space Center, it's awesome if you're into this kind of stuff. If you finish early enough I also suggest the Police Museum in Titusville (next to Cape Canaveral) http://www.aphf.org/ , it's fun. Drive to Dayton Beach and spend the night.
Day 3 - Go to the Daytona racetrack. Depends what you do here it can take from a few hours to a good half-day. Take hwy 4 to Orlando/Kissimmee. I'd stay somewhere in this area 192(Irlo Bronson)/Vineland/Word Center dr/International drive. There's a bunch of stuff to do on International drive, tons of good shopping too: http://www.internationaldriveorlando.com/thingsToDo/index.asp.
Day 4 - You can do 1...maybe 2 Disney Parks. Be there 1st thing and you could probably do MGM and Epcot in the same day...if not, I'd choose Epcot as the 1 to do. Get Fast passes for Soarin' and Test Track as soon as you can.
Day 5 - take the 4 towards the Tampa area. Although the water may be a bit cold, the best beach in Florida, IMO, is Siesta Key beach in Sarasota which is exit 205 from hwy 75. Worth the little detour, maybe have lunch or something. From Sarasota the costal drive to Naples isn't that exciting and easy to achieve(too many detours, no clearly marked trail) as it is on the A1A, on the other side of the peninsula. There's a few cool beaches here and there but time is short so I'd just head on the 75 to Naples. The public beach here is pretty nice and a large part of it is not surrounded by high-rise condos like in Miami but house neighborhoods. I'd spend the night here or on Marco Island which is really close and pretty nice.
Day 6 - Cross the everglades to Miami going on route 90/41(Tamiami trail). It's a cool road, aligators on the left side and when you get closer to Miami you'll see many places where you can take Airboat rides in the everglades. They're probably all similar so go with whichever. In Miami head towards the 1 south that will take you to the Keys. You must do this drive during the day though so leave early from Naples/Marco Island. In the Keys we stayed in Marathon, which is about half way to Key West. The accomodations choices in the Keys are fairly limited especially if you're on a budget. In Key West it is very expensive (150+/night). We stayed at Anchor Inn in Marathon and I can recommend it.
Day 7 - Go to the beach in the Bahia Honda park. Pretty awesome beach. Then spend the late afternoon and eve in Key West.

Day 8 - Return to Miami. If your condo is already booked from the previous night you can do the Key West-Miami drive at night on day 7 although I would just wait for the next day. The road is pretty badly lit and you'll be tired from the day anyway.

The second week in Miami...well, South beach obviously, art deco distric, coral cables, little havana, maybe the zoo (?), cruise to see millionaire's row.....as I said, it's cool but I'd stay a full week here only if I'd to all the museums and other attractions, otherwise....meh

Hope this helps

Have Fun!

Yeah you forgot one thing, Florida is BROKE!

Take a drive down Dania beach BLVD between I95 and A1A, every single shop is closed! Pretty depressing!

There's still plenty of awesome in Florida though.

When in Key West, definetaly stop by the information center, the guy that works there is fucking awesome! He'll give you great tips. Don't forget to visit the real most southern point in the USA, which is located on the pier next to the AIDS memorial, not the fake southern most point that all the tourists go to.

I did Miami to Key West back to Miami in one day. Left in the morning, drove back at night. The night drive was one of the scariest and most awesome drives of my life. There's literally NOBODY on the A1A from Key West to Miami at night. Driving in the middle of the ocean at night, with no other cars, no streetlights, and just moonlight was fucking epic. The must stunning scene is driving by the old abandonned seven mile bridge with just the moonlight making out it's shape. Just be careful, don't have a tire blowout or lose control, for a long stretch, there's only a very small shoulder with no guardrail. If you don't pay attention for just moment or have a tire blowout, you end up in the water, and nobody will find you until the morning!

If you don't have a condo rented out yet, PM me. I rented an awesome condo, 16th floor, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen, living room, oceanfront view, tennis court, private beach, pool, gym, private underground parking, etc, for about 800$ a week. It wasn't in Miami though, it was in Hallandale, which is an 8 minute drive to South Beach. I don't have my pics but I nabbed this one of our unit from the company's website. It's listed at 4800$ a month but the prices are very flexible during these economic times;)

Wow, thank you all for the feedback! Lexus and Dubweiser, thanks for taking the time to write all this detailed info! Really appreciated!

We already have all our hotels booked and condo reserved this is our schedule:

- 2 nights in south beach
- 1 night in Ft. Lauderdale
- 3 nights in Orlando
- 1 night in Key Largo
- 1 night in Key West
- 6 nights in Miami (condo, downtown but waterfront)

We don't want to rush and drive too much, so we're not gonna go on the west side. Maybe next time!

Keep the recommendations coming!

Have fun dude! Miami is such a nice city, there is a special vibe in this city! I like it sooo much!!
One question tho, why are you going south, then north then south again!?
Why not go to Orlando and go south afterall; orlando, ft.lauderdale, miami, keys?

If you want the "south beach" experience, hit up dinner at Nobu and drinks at Shore Club or Delano.

Snorkeling in Key Largo was nice! I did my scuba cert there.

You're welcome!

Didn't know you have it all set already :( Actually accommodations are EVERYWHERE and most of the time you get better deals on the spot then booking in advance. U should of made this thread earlier, I think my itinerary would of been more "efficient" :D

Oh well, assuming that's the order I'd say:

Day 4 - Ft-Lauderdale to Orlando. Leave Ft-Lauderdale early, drive the A1A to West Palm Beach or Fort Pierce(depending how early you want to get to Orlando) then take the Florida Turnpike to Orlando. You have time in Orlando for a few activities. Not sure which day you're getting there but in the weekend you can also go clubbing in either Downtown Disney or at Universal Studios City Walk. There's even a Margaritaville in City Walk :D You can go one night to CityWalk, one night to Downtown Disney and one night on International drive. Downtown Disney also has Disney Quest which is pretty cool.
Day 5 - You can do the Kennedy space center today and the Police hall of fame if it peeked your interest.
Day 6 - You can go to Disney. I stand by what I said before, Epcot 1st, MGM 2nd or both in the same day if you can but it's tight and you'd rush. I can also recommend you the Kona Cafe restaurant located in Dinesy's Polynesian resort. It's awesome and kinda different(polynesian style). But you got to book in advance, which is the case for most restaurants inside Disney. And by "in advance" I mean...now or as soon as possible.
Day 7 - You could do MGM (make sure to see the Stunt show at MGM, it's awesome) in the morning and leave to Key Largo afterwards. You have plenty of time but depends what you plan on doing in Key Largo. If you're scuba diving there on this day then you gotta leave Orlando early, it's a 5h drive.
Day 8 - Key Largo to Key West. Eat breakfast at the Wooden Spoon in Marathon. Awesome place :D. I stand by my suggestion to spend the beach day at Bahia Honda. The public beaches in Key West suck. Key West became fun at night, especially if it's the weekend :D
