So that means people are willing to pay more for a premium product?....the Fiesta outsells the Mazda by quite a large margin in the US.

poor people with enough money for a new car will get the biggest car they can for the price, poor people won;t say like: oh, I'll pay 16K for a base 500 instead of 10K for a base Aveo...they won';t care the Aveo has worse fuel economy (the difference is too small), doesn't have power windows and other equipment adn is not as fun to drive....it;s bigger and considerably cheaper. And whoever will have that 16K will buy a Jetta for the space, a Civic or Corolla for the reputation and overall balance.

The difference in sales figures I would attribute to a few factors:

The Fiesta is bigger (or at least it seems) then the Mazda 2
The Mazda 2 has a smaller less powerful engine - big negative in the US
Mazda as a brand is not nearly as appreciated in the US compared to Canada, and Ford is the opposite
The Fiesta has a lot more options that let you personalize the car more plus the choice between hatch and sedan.

Valid points, makes sense that the Fiesta would outsell the Mazda in the US. I still believe the Fiat will have a decent run, it is 7000$ cheaper than the base Mini, and the hike in power is only 20hp or so.

Niche products either way, but the Fiat has a potentially larger market audience than the Mini does.
 
agreed, I hope it does well (even though I'm not fond of the 500 myself) so that Fiat brings over other Fiat corp products.

What is interesting is that very large urban areas like LA, Chicago or NYC are great markets for a car like the 500 but we'll see how it does.
 
if they would wait to see how fiat did, they wouldn't expand an additional 2500 square feet "in case"
Although I do agree everyone wants to see how successful fiat is, I do believe Chrysler/Dodge will also be more successful with their smaller cars better interiors etc.
I guess we'll have to wait and see

le marche americain canadien nen vendra pas de si tot car, tout simplement ya moins de marche..
 
Je sais, au québec il y en a du marcher! Le quebec a un marcher tres different du reste de lamerique du nord, je trouve tellemement dommage tout cela, nous passons a coter de super voiture. Merci a ford de faire le pas et de nous montrer ce dont il etait capable en europe.
 
^ je ne sais pas pourquoi tu dis cela car chrysler et alfa ont deja fait le move, alfa importera 2-3 voiture américaine et vice versa, nous naurons peu etre pas tout mais au moin une ou 2 serait un bon départ :)
