I've been reading up a bit on the pharmaceutical industry as well as watching some documentaries like the one about that doctor in the US who can cure certain types of cancer but has been challenged several times by the FDA and big pharma companies. I've researched this a lot and for some reason I can't find any new cures for any diseases that have been "discovered" and released to the public since the late 1960s.
The only exception was the discovery that stomach ulcers are actually caused by a bacterial infection (Elicobacter something...) and can be cured with antibiotics.
The general assumption is that the reason for this is because we test more and better on humans before releasing any new medicine, but then you think 40 years? That's a really long test, consider all the people who are forced to continue taking regular medication every day to keep their Diabetes in check (example) or any other condition they might have.
Also consider how much the makers of Insulin, blood/glucose testing machines and accessories, and other Diabetes medications would LOSE, if someone came up tomorrow morning with a "Diabetes shot" that would boost the pancreatic performance or simply restore it to its normal capacity.
Think about it, and discuss, or should I say disgust...

My take on all this is simple, I think that with something as readily available and informative as the Internet, and if used correctly, we won't really need actual MDs for much longer in our history of humanity. I have a strong feeling that we are heading towards an "era" of self healing, self medication, much like the hippie generation had, only with better, more modern technology, and mostly, a better reference book known as Google.
