Driveway winter prep tips needed

Hi,

We often discussing prepping our cars for winter so my question might be a little bit unusual...

As you know, a lot of suburban neighborhoods don't allow us to park on the street overnight. We have 3 cars to park in my narrow driveway at home. Two cars can fit side by side with only about a foot between them. That gap closes really fast and gets dangerous when the snow/ice accumulates.

I'm looking for a way to set up a small extension on the driveway - onto the front lawn. In the past we just parked 2 wheels on the compacted snow but then the grass is ruined come spring time. Can you guys think of any other crafty way to get a portion of 1 car on the front lawn without ruining the grass?

Thanks!

You know, I thought it would be better when I got my MK5 GTI. It may be a hatchback, but it's a hell of a lot wider than my MK3 Jetta sedan!

Make an ice-rink on your lawn and park on it. :D

You say that if you ''compact'' the snow with your car, the lawn still freeze and die ?

Since I don't know the size of your car :

-Go to Rona/Patrick Morin and buy enough 2'x8'x2'' insulating foam panels to cover the grass 2 panels thick.
-Buy enough 4'x8'x3/4'' aspenite panel (pressed wood chip) to cover the foam.
-Cover the grass with the foam, 2 foam thick
-Cover the foam with the aspenite so your tire don't destroy the foam panels.

Let the snow cover this build and pack it with your tire. You can ''ice'' it with water to held it togeter.

You have a nice parking lot under which your grass won't freeze. And this spring you can store it for next winter or return it to the store if the panels are not damaged. :D

**I know my english is so-so, so forgive any mistake please. ;) **

Just park the car on the grass come spring add seeds to the dead area and problem solved! Its grass buddy not the end of the world.

i'm just going to throw out the obvious answer. extend the driveway? just get some nice stones or something like that if you don't want more pavement

Buddy, I mentioned in the original post that I have done that before. It takes at least half the summer for the dead patch to catch up to the rest and it's a real eye-sore for a front lawn.

I wish. Problem is we have some fancy stone making up the driveway so it would actually cost an arm and a leg to extend it using the same material. I live with my parents so negotiations are harsh!

I just shovel the lawn and park on the grass like mentioned before. Although I don't fix it in the spring. But It's doesn't look thaaaat bad anyway.

i know what you mean. i'm trying to get my mom to let me put a concrete slab in the corner of our driveway for when i get a nice car. our driveway is at least 65 feet long, 20 feet wide. and all gravel.
but parents are parents. another suggestion i could make is remove the sod (the layer that's grass) put it in your basement, or someplace else. water it all throughout winter, and come spring put it back in place. i know it sounds crazy as fuck. but it might just be crazy enough to work!

En plus son père pourra se pratiquer à putter pendant l'hiver, super...

Great idea, then once a week you just have to cut the grass with scissors and spray some febreeze to let go the odor ..... you probably just turn 15 am i right ....

nope.
but it's an idea.
i know people with heated garages that don't even put their cars in it for the winter, they dig up their plants and put them in the garage to take care of them. i don't see the big deal

Just Replace the Grass in the spring time... Sod is only a couple bucks a square foot,
we throw excess sod and other material away all the time at work i could let u know in the spring when we have some to give away.
If not The Ply wood option would work fine. You could also install an extra 2ft to your driveway in uni-stone or some other stone its not really a big job. would take a day or two.

Keeping grass looking good is one hell of a quest, i flip out when the Hydro guy walks through the garden, where the snow is compacted it leaves destroyed grass when the spring comes.
There is nothing really you can put on grass that will not damage it/without being stupid expensive. The only solution you have is to keep your current setup, but mark it out with posts or rope and shovel the shit out of it. You can also use one of those heated extensions used for roofing to keep the original driveway outline perfect making it easy to shovel out.

Well I can see that at least some of you understand that fixing the ruined grass every summer is a deterrent. For the ones who don't, I really can't explain it any other way.

I like the idea of laying down some wood and foam but I'm afraid that an accident might happen once ice forms on it and wheels start spinning...

It's a bit of a pickle.
