My friend is looking for the exact same thing as you. We noticed the same thing with the engines. If you're set on an RX-8, just dont cheap out and buy one that wasn't well maintained.... because if it wasn't well maintained its asking for major problems.

Mostly people don't change the engine oil . Mazda suggest every oil change every 8000km , it's way too long
But my opinion , don't buy 04-05 . Before you buy an RX8 , make a compression test on the engine . Note : it better to do the compression test with an rotary compression gauge .

That is kind of what I figured. Thanks for the info :)
Aside from possible engine troubles, what else is typically going wrong with the 04-05s?

BUY MY RX-8. modified or stock.
original engine, 70,000kms, never winter driven (NO RUST)
warranty on the core until august 30th, 2012
i have full records of services done under my ownership (IMPORTANT FOR ENGINE WARRANTY)
oil change every 5000kms with castrol gtx 5w30 and k&n filter
DOES NOT BURN CRAZY AMOUNTS OF OIL (maybe 1/2 a quart every 5000kms)
many maintenance modifications done (clutch pedal brace, hawk pads, optima battery)
no problems with the starter (starts every single time)
did a compression test in august at Mazda and everything is perfect (i have the report)
i've also been premixing idemitsu rotary oil and FP+ with every gas fillup for extra lubrication on the rotors and to clean the injectors (for last ~30,000 kms)

if you want a well maintained rx-8, don't look further!
it's always better to buy a car from someone that knows what they're doing as opposed to a car that's at a dealer/private with no proper service records

$15,000 with all the mods (including coilovers, wheels, CF lip, & much more!)
or $12,500 without coilovers, wheels, intake, short shifter

EDIT: forgot i also changed the ignition coils, spark plugs, and spark plug wires last year as well.
if you don't know why i changed all these pieces listed, be ready to invest money yourself to do it.

Im still trying to get my friend to go see yours, but he's been busy lately. Did you track the car much though?

i've never tracked the car.

and as far as i know, nor did the previous owners.
i was told the first owner was an older gentleman that traded the car in for a mustang convertible
second owner was a younger guy (didn't seem like a racer), sold the car to me to start up his company

Basically this is a great car ... Just check the engine compression , ignition coils , catalsyeur .... That's it

Plaisirs garanties !
