Article: Educate me on air suspensions/bags

in my case, it's not to drop it to the ground, but more to have it at a low height, but be able to raise it for dirt roads/load/etc.

coilovers are always low, which bothers me.

im actually interested in getting something like this done on my 09 volvo c30, its just hard to find a kit for it sometimes i wish i bought a vw lol

ahha, me too would be for a volvo (V50).

I've read quit a lot in the last few weeks.. it's the same platform as Mazda3 and european ford focus so there is hope.

airsociety has a few Mazda3 builds. I think the front will be easy, but the rear will likely need some custom struts or universal bags.

Nobody asked this yet so I'm going to ask:

How does 2.5k$ bags compare to full coilovers suspention of the same value road handling wise?

And how much weight does a system like this can add on a car.

In other words, can bags be an interesting option for someone that is purely performance oriented?

I have read a post that had weight difference, it was lighter in the front, a a tad heavier in the back (I can find it again)

In terms of performance, a few race cars use them, what I have read is that the more pressure you put in, the stiffer it gets. I'm sure it's good to be able to adjust it but I don't know the physics difference.. both have shocks so it's only the pring that is different.

^The difference is that a static suspension has been tested for the past 50+ years in motorsports, were as this is new. I'm sure in the upcoming years a lot of data will be gathered. I think Quebec is ideal for these type of setup. You can adjust ride height on the fly with a few switches. What worries me is reliability.

reliabilty is far from been an issue: big rig use them since a very long time.

track wise: it's good and bad...depend on how you see it.

it's possible to adjust the stiffness(spring) while racing..but you need to have a good management system(based on PSI..most basic one are that way)

height adjustement isn't used on the track..cause with low air bag ride(lower ride) there's no stiffness and ride like a boat .. but it's really comfy..which isn't what you want on a race track...lol

but while changing stiffness, you don't change compression/rebound so you can have different behavior not necessary wanted :|

You need to think that air bag only replace the "spring" part of the suspension. you still need to have a shock.

If you track your car with stock shock or high price one is really where you'll see the difference.

ya the c30 is built on fords C1 platform which includes these vehicles as well:
2003 – Ford Focus C-Max (C214)
2004 – Mazda 3 (BK)
2005 – Ford Focus (International) (C307)
2004 – Volvo S40 (P11)
2004 – Volvo V50 (P12)
2006 – Mazda 5 (and related Ford i-Max)
2006 – Volvo C70 (P15)
2007 – Volvo C30 (P14)
2008 – Ford Kuga (C394)
2009 – Mazda 3
2012 – Volvo V40

so im hoping somebody has done work on one of these vehicles and can fit an air kit on the C30

search "mazda" on airsociety, there is one montreal build, and another guy from the states.

I'm hopeful...

i did some research...bagging for volvos is rare most people who have bags got custom kits done and they cost about anywhere 2.5k to 4k which is damn expensive, at that price range your better off saving it for your next car, still really wanna bag my ride tho :(

I would def. see if these would be plug and play:

http://www.airsociety.net/forums/showthread.php/2157-Sam-s-bagged-mazda-3-Airrex-V2-autopilot

according to this: http://www.c30world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18324

the mazda3 (gen 1) and C30 seems to have interchangeable suspensions, so it should work for you... plug and play.. off the shelf setup.

now, do it! DO IT!

Will DEFINITELY be looking into this once summer comes around and finals are over...doubt anybody else in Mtl will have a bagged c30 if i can get it done ;)
