What oil does a mid 80's 305 take?

My guess is 10w30. the 305 in my s15 runs fucking mint, so I wanna keep it running perfect for this season. unfortunately the guy i bought it from had his friend do all the work on the car, and he has no clue what oil it takes.

also, is there anything i should watch out for with the 305/th400 combo in my truck?

If you have a flat tappet cam, then you need to add some kind of Zinc into your engine. Today's oils are for modern engines. There are additives you can add to modern oil, or you can get oil specifically for your older engine..

If you have a a hydraulic roller cam it is less critical.

idk what the internals are beside it being "rebuilt as stock".. I've heard alot of 305's and they all seem to make noticeable lifter noise, but mine makes absolutely none(it's a bit eerie). would that mean I have rollers?

Regarde l'huile redline. Beaucoup de zinc dans sa composition.

I THINK the roller cams came in during the 1987 model year (not sure). If it has a 1 piece rear main seal, it is an 1986 or later. Best way is to check the year from the engine stampings, that way you can tell what kind of block you have.
