Hi
you mind explaining what is or does a Tomato firmware please ?, never heard that .
Thanks in advance

the linksys WRT54G was known for support third-party firmware, which offered more features than what the linksys firmware could offer.
With the release of the WRT54GL (L for linux) it's source code was available to the public due to the GNU license agreement, so many different firmwares were born.. DD-WRT, Tomato, OpenWRT, etc..

Which version of the WRT54G is it ? Should be printed on the bottom ? Or the first 4 numbers of the Serial number ?

These were solid routers... Barely ever needed to power cycle them, once they were running dd-wrt, tomato or openwrt.. I like using them with coovaAP for creating simple HotSpot access points for small cafés, without requiring any crazy setups...

Wow.. surprised this is still up for grabs...

I'm thinking the same...

Might be interested depending on the answer to wire into my car for wardriving purposes. :D

LOL :) Wiring the wrt54* series for wardriving however, you'd be better off by at least replacing the antenna with external units. The default antenna on these units was not the greatest, and the range is limitted. However they are some of the most stable and most flexible units Linksys ever made..

In my buddies coffee shop, I intalled a WRT54G (v3 I think) with coovaAP for the main routing/processing.. And to get the extra wireless range, I added a Dlink DIR-655 as a daisy chained access point :) The DLINK needs to be power cycled every couple of days (probably due to the number of connect/disconnects from wifi clients), but the wrt54gl runs for months without needing anything.

0031 are the first 4 numbers of the serial

hope that helps, sorry for the delay completely forgot to check guys

All WRT54G serial prefixes start with a "C"
WRT54G - "CD??" (v8.1 is an exception since it is "MDF0")
WRT54GS - "CG??"
WRT54GL - "CL??" or "CF??" or "CO??"

And the ?? are dependant on the version itself.. :dunno:

They were all great routers, and super solid. Just depends what fimware you want to install on it, which makes some neutered models a little less usefull for some purposes. That's the main reason for knowing the version.
