There's one thing to say though.
I started driving in 1987.
Back then the most powerful cars we could afford or buy had about 200HP. My Capri was stock because nobody could afford to mod anything back then, and it had about 160HP. But back then not everyone had that kind of car, most of my friends had terribly underpowered cars, one even had a 3 cylinder Innocenti!
Back then, my dad had a 1984 supercharged Buick Skylark that ran circles around the Capri, but it was FWD and I got sideways a few times on ice with it. Luckily I didn't actually hit anything, not even a curb but I've always found RWD cars more maneageable, more predictable.
Today any 18 year old kid can get a STOCK 150HP Civic/Mazda/Focus, etc. 150HP on FWD cars, that when modded can easily push 200HP.
I still think that new drivers should be limited to small block, small HP engined cars for at least a year or two before they gain the maturity needed to drive a car with any real power.
