X10000

For a 30 000$ budget, my 3 choices for MY OWN personal-subjective driving pleasure would be the following in order of preference, based on haven driven and owned (well I currently have a 2006 911 but did drive a whole bunch of 996 before making my choice) all of the cars:

1- 2007 Boxster S (or a 2005 if the 2007 are too expensive);
2-2002 911 (the 2005+ will cost you at least 45-50K);
3-2006 Z4M.

I prefer the drive of the 987S to that of the 3.6L 2002-2004 996 (in addition to the look of the exterior and the interior).

The Z4M is so much fun but in the end it just doesn't change directions, brake, sound or transmit information through the steering wheel the way a Porsche does. It's just a notch below, but you notice it.

Jacques, what do you prefer on the 2007 boxter S from the 2002 911?

Steering response is a lot better and the chassis feels more solid. I have to say all the 996s I drove were convertibles and it showed that the 911 cab had its roof sliced off. I am sure the 996 coupe would have felt different. The 987S was a lot better and more composed going through bumps and I felt the car ''did what I wanted'' more. As far as power, the 996 has a lot more low-end grunt but it evens out once the tach swings past 4000RPMs. That being said it's all a matter of personal preference and a 2002-2004 911 is probably the best bargain for a used sports car.

I was surprised to see how different my 997 cab felt compared to the 996 cab; not as much chassis flex, suspension didn't ''crash'' as much over bumps and road imperfections, steering response was quicker and acceleration is pretty much identical.

Even though I have ''upgraded'' vs my old Boxster S I still miss it a lot. The 911 slingshots out of corners with a lot more autority but the Boxster S is better going into corners and it understeers less. I know it's cliche but it feels like a true go-kart. I can't say I prefer my 2006 997 cab more than my old 2006 Boxster S because they each have their own qualities but one thing is for sure, I would never had sold it for a 996 cab....

The thing I miss the most is hearing all the intake-induction noise from the engine of the Boxster S:( In the 911 the driver is further away from the engine so everything is more muted whereas in the Boxster S every time you tap the gas you get a symphony of noises which reasonate a hell of a lot throughout the cabin. I loved that.... At least in the 911 you don't have to use clamps to snap the roof on...;p
