Hawaii?

Anybody here ever been to Hawaii? I don't mean spending a week in a resort but actually visiting Hawaii's different islands and hundreds of hiking trails? I would love to tackle Stairway to Heaven, Sacred Falls, Olomana Trail, etc. but don't want to spend $4k on a resort I won't be spending time in.

Any suggestions? Personal experiences? Best way to fly cheap?

it's the US so you can stay in little hotels or cheap hiltons

I think there are closer places to visit that are nice as well (caribbeans, costa rica etc).

Well worth the money!

Avoid Honolulu it is a tourist trap. All the other islands are great and there are many things to do and many beaches to explore. What is your budget? There are cheapy hotels but they are dingy, when I went there with my wife the cost per week was $5000 (excluding airfare) and this is not the high end.
