Road Test: VW Golf R Review

Sure, especially if you consider the fact that the VR6 was replaced by a first gen 2.0T. For that reason alone I wouldn't buy one. But you have to consider exclusivity as well as what the badge means to enthusiasts (or used to mean). For the price I still think it's absolutely worth it for someone who likes the entire package. I'm also sure that the resale value will remain very high as with previous generations of the R (r32)

True.

Okay now i'm gonna use french to get my point clear.

I hate reviews from Autoguide.com and it is not true the 500 for Canada were sold out in hours, that is total bs. Back in May you could still get the R in any color. However, as mentioned in a previous thread this car is not worth the $40k price tag and premium over the GTI.

for 4000$ more you get AWD, more power, bumpers, better brakes, seats, exclusivity etc.. And a significantly higher resale value. Certainly worth it. Maybe the GTI is expensive to start off with, but that's another argument. For 40k..this car is great value.

The GTI does a fantastic job at that for everyday driving and even the occasional track day, if you want to blow an additional $12-$15K on AWD, leather seats and a badge it is our prerogative but the R is not worth the premium price tag over the very good GTI. At $40K + taxes + dealer prep + all other fees there are much better choices in terms of fun factor.

12-15000$$$???

A fully loaded GTI is 36 000$

Go to VW.ca and look before making up imaginary numbers.

I don't even know what I am bothering to respond to a child, must be the slow day. You can have a great time with the base GTI with no "stupid and useless extras such as leather, sunroof and all other crap". You can get great fun from the GTI for $27-$28K + taxes which puts it in at $12K less than your R. But since you like badges go right ahead. Did you put your name down yet for the dreadful B Class?

I did. My wife is looking forward to it. Thanks for asking.

Even a Base GTI with sport pack is 33 000$. Why do you insist on making up prices? 12-15000$ lol

Base means "base" (no sports pack), and yes you can get it for $27K (no options). It is a great fun car to drive and don't need a $46K R to enjoy the Golf GTI feel.

I went through all this shit with my wife 9 months ago when we changed her Golf for the MKVI GTI, with sunroof and sport packs we got it for $10K less than the R which was non-negotiable at the time (yes, we did look and consider the R). She loves her car with no frills, 6-speed manual and the cloth seats are much better than leather.

As the time I tried talking my wife into a 3-Series or X1 and she said no without hesitation. She only likes hatchbacks, hates SUV's, hates minivans, etc... If BMW would bring the M135i she would be driving that instead of the GTI.

The only thing performance oriented in the sports pack is 18" wheels. lol it's mostly interior trim.

after talking to my friend that owns one, it makes sense. this car is clearly overpriced, anyway you look at it. the awd system is more of a FWD that will divert power to the back as needed. it caters to a very niche market. my friend bought his because he wanted some semblance of luxury and a car with a bit of power. the other catch is that for his line of work it'd be detrimental for him to appear like he has money, so bmw/mercedes were out of the question. therefore a car that looks 99% like a golf to non-vw enthusiasts, was perfect.

it sucks how many features the USDM one loses vs the european one...

but DJD is right, it's a car for hatchback/vw nerds. for the rest of us, it's a poor buy.

I think you are meler. All i did was build them as equal as possible. With the satnav, leather, sport pack. So at least you are comparing the same thing. I wanted to show that the diffrence (AWD, seats, exclusivity, bumpers, brakes, badges, higher resale) only costs 4000$ more which is a very good value.

The Base R price is higher because it had ALL these options as standard. For comparisons sake.

I think what KC did is the logical way to look at this. If you guys want to just go on VW.ca and look at "starting prices" than yes its a 10k difference. If you take the time to compare apples with apples then its obvious that you're not paying 10k extra for AWD, leather, and a badge. Thats just bad faith talk.

And allroad likes to throw the word fanboy around, but it really seems like you're the one with the bias here, ignoring FACTS and ranting on about leather sucks and 12-15k difference.

If you like the R and can afford it go right ahead and get one. All I am saying is the $12K difference between the R and standard GTI is unjustified when it comes to fun factor and everyday driving. The cloth seats in the GTI look great, are very supportive, comfortable and most represent the DNA of the original MK1 GTI. The Germans have it down to an art to sucker in buyers and charge premium for certain options and badges.
