I had a similar experience at volvo laval. They offered 60$ alignments so I made an appointment and drove down from the south shore.I waited my ass off before my car went in, and I waited forever before I heard any news. The service guy calls me over and tells my my tie rods are not great.
The mechanic showed me and it was legit (they were jobber scrap lasted only a year) so I told him fine, take the car down I'll change it and come back. So the service guy gives my me bill of 120$. I asked him what is this? The guy tells me that he had to charge me by the hour for the work done. I told him there was no work done and then I asked him what kind of mechanic takes an hour to put my car on the lift and tell me my tie rods are done.
He sent me to see the manager, the manager was the biggest scumbag I've ever seen in my life. I asked him 2 questions.
1. Why would he charge me 120$ when an alignment only costs 60$
2. How did it possibly take an hour for the mechanic to put my car on the list, it's clear I'm getting ripped off.
He told me that there was no alignment done, so it's by the hour, and that it took the mechanic a long time to put my car on the lift because of "your low front spoiler". I literally laughed in his face and told him "it's not my problem that your alignment machine doesnt support your own manufactures cars for service, that part is an OEM part".
I told him, alright, well since I'm paying for it, put my car back on the lift and align it.. He was getting frustrated with me and told me that "I can't do that bla bla bla, I told him, "well I'm not paying for it, bla bla bla".
Long story short I wanted out of there (I was too pissed off and didn't want to lose my cool and credibility) and ended up paying like 40$ for the "verification".
Then I went to my old toyota dealership and payed them 120$ to align my car by a mechanic I worked with and trusted.
They are fucked up in their mind for charging you 120$ just for a check-up but were you really going to align a car with worn tie-rods ? As soon you hit a bump your alignment is off again.
