I haven't really stretched my Jettas legs since I got it, so i decided to drive to Chicago instead of fly, at the same time see what kind of MPG it can do on the highway.
Here are the numbers:
First fill up
Temperature:Approx 0-3 degrees
Approx speed:cruise control @ 105kmh
Kms: 496.4km
Fuel used: 37.1821L
L/100km: 7.4L
Second fill up
Temperature:Approx 5-8 degrees
Approx speed:cruise control @ 120kmh
Kms: 394km
Fuel used: 29.862L
L/100km: 7.5L
Third fill up
Temperature:Approx 10-12 degrees
Approx speed:cruise control @ 130kmh
Kms: 475km
Fuel used: 35.6442L
L/100km: 7.5L
Interesting how even though I increased my speed throughout the trip as I grew more impatient to get to my destination, my fuel consumption didn't increase by much. Winds on the travel day were calm and elevation between MTL and Chicago is roughly the same, so I'm guessing the lack of variation was due to the temperatures increasing which caused me to get better MPG's even though I gradually increase speed.
Car is a 2008 Jetta 2.5L with 6AT transmission.
Well see how she does on the way back, but for a car that's considered as a gas guzzler and is rated at 8.1L on the highway, I'm pretty happy with a real world 7.5L.
