With time and experience I have classified engineers into 3 categories:
1) The "cubicle engineer", this is the hard core developer that is only comfortable in his cubicle. Not very sociable however instrumental for the success of the product.
2) The "know it all engineer", this is the engineer that thinks he's above everyone else in terms of knowledge. Highly technical, very dangerous to put in front of customers because he thinks he knows best and on occasion will insult the end customer.
3) The "business engineer", this is the engineer that gradually moves up the ladder and takes a business role. Shows empathy, technical, and develops business opportunities. The really good ones become CTO's, CEO's, V.P.'s. Typically, these engineers do not stick in cubicles very long.
The best engineers are the creative ones that can think outside of the box.
