You're selling a car and someone pays with a cashier's check from a bank (TD)

Do you take it?

Call me distrustful but I'm considering not accepting a sale on my Sidekick, the guy is supposed to meet me later at the SAAQ for the transaction and he told me he's bringing a 2250$ cashier's check.

Mind you if I wanted to fraud someone I'd pick a better car than a Sidekick, for a larger sum. Still...it's Friday and I won't be able to verify the check until Monday morning and even though I work for a bank I'm not directly involved with transactions so I have no idea how to tell if a check is fraudulent.

He is driving down from Sherbrooke though.

Any thoughts?

Trolls are interesting and always welcome.

Ask him to have the check certified by TD... That way you can be at ease regarding possible return of the check due to NSF...

ask for a certified check, i think 8$ a pop (for him), but the bank pretty much puts aside the money amount on the cheque, so you know it's there..

It will be a certified cheque, I guess I'm worried it might just be a fake. Anyone with a laser printer could print one out. After all it's only a piece of paper...

Ask him for a traite bancaire its the safest way, he can go to any branchs of his bank and its cheaper than a certified check

ask him the # of the bank that issued it. and call them to make sure if you want to be sure it's not fake.

My friend got screwed by that trick with a false cashiers check... also, the transaction was during the weekend, so he could not call and verify authenticity.

ah, that would explain maybe why the guy I bought the Subaru from wanted cash

I've often gotten Bank Money Order/Certified Check for large purchases but never thought about being scammed by it.

C'est facile à forger un faux chèque certifier. Assure toi de le faire valider à la banque avant de lui donner les clés. Pour 2,250 $, c'est une assurance de plus non négligeable.

Paid my car with a certified check, the seller called RBC to verify the number. I would have done the same.
