Montreal police and public health officials are warning of a new synthetic street drug that's said to be 80 times stronger than morphine, and 40 times more powerful than heroin.
Police issued the warning during a news conference this morning announcing details of a recent raid on a secret east-end drug lab that produced a drug called fentanyl.
Some 300,000 pills of the drug were found during the April 24 raid. The chemical powder at the lab was so powerful that four police officers were overcome by the fumes and were hospitalized.
Two men were arrested, and are still behind bars.
Police say the suspects were preparing to ship thousands of pills to the United States. The remainder of the pills were sold in Montreal, generally over the Internet, and generally to youths.
