Deck Renovation and contractor problems

Well here it goes. Hired a company I found on kijiji to do my deck renovations and I wished I had never made that decision and hired a bigger company to do the job. Long story short, this is my first time hiring anybody for anything like this and made some rookie mistakes. These guys where suppose to start work at 9 am on may 14. I called them at 11 am and they told me they were running late. They show up at around 1 to drop off some wood and take off again only to come back at 4. Once they start working , I noticed how clueless and how bad they where working. It showed that there was no planning or anything. They were missing tools like proper sockets, extensions cords, and some necessary bolts right off the bat. They install the flashing to the house with interior floor screws, then the ledgerboard over it with literally ikea tools u get when you buy furniture from them. Anyways not even 1 hour in they tell me that they are gonna leave once more but for dinner this time. This is where I drew the line and decided to stop everything then and there. Now here is the problem, my first mistake was to give them a total of 3100$ for the material that was needed for my deck in advance(I know, I'm still kicking myself for this). They had delivered about 1000$ worth till that point. I told him to add up all the bills of material purchased to date and to charge for wtv delivery plus work he has put into the job, which was literally 1 hour and to reimburse me the rest. He verbally accepted and said he will come back tomorrow. Well to my surprise, the day after I received a formal notice that he's also claiming the rest of the value of our contract and if I don't comply he'll sue me for breach of contact. When I called him he lied about how much would he delivered and he's exact words"I don't know what you did with the wood". I'm definitely going to file against him in small claims on Tuesday. Sorry for the long text but had to get it off my chest. Haven't slept for a couple of days. Any advice guys?

Ha I like how they gave you an exact time ! "Be there exactly 9am give us money"

If he doesn't have his rbq licences, you can still call them up and make a complaint that he is advertising having rbq numbers. You won't get your money back from it but at least you'll be giving him some hard time with the Régie... (that's if they actually do something...)

and take screenshots of the ad if it mentions RBQ

Generally I always try to have work done by contractors that allow me to buy my materials. It's a hassle because of lots of running around but at least in a case like this I can just take everything back (or keep for another contractor) and just lose the "downpayment" for the labor (never pay everything in advance either)

Made a friend of mine call him and record the convo, he claims he has all his permits and then when you ask him for numbers he becomes defensive and comes up with some bullshit stories that someone stole his number and used it and blablabla.

mhmm. stole it..... disaster.

Sorry OP but thats what you get from hiring ''contractors'' who advertise on Kijiji. I guess he was the cheapest one you found?

If he doesn't have an RBQ#, sue him in small claims court.

Anyways I'm sending him a registered letter tomorrow for a refund and if he doesn't get back to me, Ill bring him to court. I'm gonna ruin this guys reputation if he has any that is. Ill report him to every government site out there that I can. I do wanna share his info here but not sure if its a good idea if we do actually go to court.
