HELP : Wifi works, but can't reach router through IP, need cable

We had a sewer backup and the insurance company relocated us in a condo.

We brought our wireless modem/router with us so we could do WIFI.

We are normally with Teksavvy, but the condo is hooked to videotron, not sure if that matters.

Internet comes through in their modem, which I Ethernet to my router.

Laptop detects the network via wifi and internet works, but I can't 192.168.1.1 to the router.

If there is an Ethernet cable plugged from the router to the laptop, internet doesn't work, but I can reach the 192.168.1.1 router.

I don't understand this.

Also, our network name is Tan, but in Windows 8 in the network connections, it shows connected to Tan2, which is a network name I can't find when connecting to the router with the cable.

are you sure your router's adress is 192.168.1.1 ?

You can launch the command ipconfig /all to see your router's ip adress

Yes, I'm sure.

Internet only works through Wifi on a network name (Tan 2) that I can't find in the router.

I can only access the router if an Ethernet cable is plugged in, but then the internet doesn't work.

Our smart phones detect the normal network (Tan) but the internet doesn't work, and they don't detect the "other" one (tan 2)

Well, the wireless router/modem worked perfectly back home with Teksavvy, I just can't get it to work with the modem that's already in the loaner condo. I'm thinking it could be a settings conflict.

It's a TP-Link TD-W8901G.

The supplied modem is one of those fat black Arris boxes.

I disconnected the router completely and just plugged the modem directly in the laptop and it's connected to the Tan 2 network so I don't know where that comes from but internet works.

My modem/router is used at home to receive and distribute the internet connection, but now I just want it to take what's coming out of their modem and broadcast it on Wifi.

Hope I'm making myself clear...

sounds like settings, are you on cable or DSL at home?

There is no "other" network, it's just windows that thinks it's a new network because the modem changed, it can be dumb like that

Now the wifi is up but but useless. Whenever I connect to it I get the "Limited" tag in windows 8.

The wired PC works, there is no WAN port on either the modem or the router. The modem's Ethernet cable is plugged in port 1 on the router, and the PC is on port 2.

Fun facts :

PC : Internet works with wire to router, but cannot access router's settings via 192.168.1.1
Laptop : Can connect to wifi, but no internet. Can open the router config without any problem 192.168.1.1.

Running the diagnostic on the laptop it says "the DNS server is not responding."

I run nslookup on the wired computer, take the DNS there and put it in the router in the LAN settings, no worky.

Nslookup on the laptop says timeout after two seconds and it also says that the address is 192.168.1.1 which is my router.

Why the fuck does the laptop try to resolve names using the router's address?

This is getting ridiculous I've never had so many retarded problems with a fucking wifi network.

The modem's Ethernet cable is plugged in port 1 on the router, and the PC is on port 2.
Then the modem (modem gateway AKA modem/router) is acting a switch.
The computer is then NOT getting a 192.168.x.x and because of that, you can't use the "router" GUI.

Which also explains why you're able to use the GUI over wifi; the laptop is getting a 192.168.x.x, the Gateway is the one from the router not the ISP, but you can't browse because the "router" is NOT getting an IP from Videotron ;)

En résumé:

Don't even bother trying to fix anything..there's really nothing to fix. Find a 3rd party router (not a modem..) OR use an RJ45..

Yes, the modem/router which is mine and which I use with Teksavvy at home should be acting as a switch in this situation.

That fucking sucks, I need wifi to work from home. I'm gonna have to call the insurance company who found this place and tell them I need a proper setup to work ASAP.

I also brought my Xbox360 for some entertainement and to watch Breaking bad from a USB stick and their TV is an old fat bitch that has component video, but the resolution of the Xbox is too fucking high and the screen is just a blind man's guess. Resetting resolution by holding Y and RT on bootup didn't work either it just flickers some more and stays the same.

I hope nobody has to ever go through having your home flooded and being relocated to an half ass old man's residence that barely made it out of the 70's.

Je sais pas quel smartphone tu as, sur Android pogne toi WIFI ANALYZER et check que ton router wi-fi ait pas le meme nom qu'un router d'un voisin.
