I'm exactly in the same position as your friend.
A lateral move would be a Golf R if you can find one, same price, great tuning potential and a much better build quality and interior features. The difference is HUGE!
If he wants similar or better performance, the germans are the only way to go; 335xi, S4. If he wants to sacrifice AWD like I'm doing and really step it up; M3, C63 AMG.
Be warned though, having driven all of these, none will give you the combo of insane handling and rawness that is exclusive to these rally rockets. However I shall also support the notion that when you leave the STi world, you'll never go back unless it's a winter beater. It's a very one dimensional car; it's all about going fast under any conditions.

Have to agree wih that.. 2002 wrx with 185 xxx to 250 xxx kms varies between 6500 to 10k!! WTF!!!... (i have one and bought it for 5k at a discount price.. but put over 3k in repairs...) Subaru is overated for what it is... I'm very disapointed.. will not buy another one.. But at the same time these car are just amazing in our winter shitty weather.
If I would agree to pay over 16K for a 06 STI : no.. for this money I'll go for a newer german car with lots of easy mods possibilities.. and the quattro awd from Audi is amazing in the snow too!
Subaru = Piston slap,Engine failure,part price,RUST RUST RUST RUST everywhere,overheat issue,maintenance price (dealer),and of course : SERVICE APRES VENTE is just another dissapointment!... Quand cest rendu que l'aviseur technique du dealer subaru dit aux clients : un subaru ca doit etre traiter comme une femme pour que ca soit fiable .. pose toi des questions! (been there done that)
My friend bought a 09 sti for 31 K ... 2 weeks later air pump and tgv valve failure .. cost him 2400$ because : not covered by waranty.. again WTF.. (no mods on the car)
I'd go with an S4 no doubt

Le problème avec la S4 de ton client, c'est que même si elle est toujours sous garantie, Audi ne niaise plus avec son damn TD1 code.
Et je vais en témoigner, je ne retournerai JAMAIS vers Subaru. Et y faut prendre en considération que j'ai un STI et que ma femme conduit un Forester XT 2012 acheté neuf (location). Never ever again. Mais je conduisais justement le STI ce matin pour aller le stationner avec la pancarte à vendre, et c'est vraiment, mais vraiment agréable et raw comme conduite.

Bmw has free maintenance for as long as its warrantied. Complete coverage on everything ad u don't have to give so much as a penny on ur dealer visits. How is that more expensive to maintain than the Audi ?

Ok,je vais te donner un example...change les freins sur un 335 et compare combien ça va te couter de différence pour un S4.

J'essai de réfléchir à ce que tu dis mais je peux seulement imaginer que les pièces de 335 vont être le même prix ou moins chère que la S4... Il y a au moins 10x plus de 335i sur la route que de S4. Je comprends pas ton point. C'est deux autos à peu près dans la même gamme mais la S4 est plus exclusive donc pour les pièces elle devrait être plus chère.

I've had an Audi and as much I really liked it the maintenance was terrible on it.
German cars are known for costly maintenance/repair bills due to the fact of how expensive the cars are and how much technology is involved.
I'd rank Mercedes as the most expensive to maintain out of the 3 followed by Audi and then the bmw.
It's not like the 335 will be a lot cheaper to maintain than the s4 but it will be cheaper.
You can't sit there and try to convince me that an s4 is cheaper to maintain lol
As for brakes on my 335, I'm at 40% in the front and 55% in the back with over 60,000 Km's so they last very well considering my mods.
I love the s4 and I'm not hating on it whatsoever but I'm just trying to get the OP the best facts to help his friend make a decision.
If he drives both cars and is 50/50 on which to get well then the bmw free maintenance program should be the difference breaker

L'auto est affichée depuis à peine un mois. Justement, j'ai eu un appel tantôt, donc on va voir ce que ça va donner, mais je ne suis pas pressé de vendre, je ne vais pas le donner au premier venu.
