fixing my wrx r getting Gti/Gli Mk4?

hey guys! I just want to get some advice about my ''dilemma'' ..

I have an 02 wrx that needs few repairs on the body.... its 11yr old now and was not very well taken care of my the previous owner:(

Here's a little bit about the car:

Body :

-Rusted quarter panel (needs to weld new one)

-hole in spare tire well (trunk)

-Rocker panel (weld again..)

Rust ...

Engine is 240 xxx kms but runs great.. mechanical is ok not perfect but ok..

so the rust issue is turning me off a bit but would consider making it a project.. I got a quote at a body shop for 1700$ they fix everything mentionned above. but even with good body repairs I'm scared that it comes back in the next few years....

If I'm fixing it i'm planning to get a new wrx engine since this one is starting to slap when cold .. and 240k is a LOT of milleage...

here's my budget : 5000-6000$

Engine : 2000$
Swap: 700$ or something around that
Body : 1500-2500$

At the same time I have a little something for the Gti/GLI 1.8T ..

It would be my first Vw and would defenitely go for a stg 1+ or 2 from unitronic

Same budget : 5-6k$

So what would you guys do with that.. i'm just trying to get good advices and ideas.

Awd is not THAT important to me ...

More looking into having a cheap, reliable car with great engine performance (225hp or more sounds great to me) and I really dont wanna throw this money by the window..

Suggestions?

Thanks you
Mike

Wow great answer .... is it me or the Ti-coune on mr are always posting stupid comments... you should read twice evrything that you post.. there's nothing helpful in what you just wrote...

Get an evo and dont reply sh** on my thread..

I would just sell the WRX and go for the vw.

I like Impreza's way more but rust is the worst thing to deal with, and then you have to swap the motor too, it just sounds like a lot of work.

But if you did everything properly the car shouldn't be any less reliable then a newer gti or something.

1700$ doesn't seem like enough to fix those problems

Yeah thats how I feel about it too.. the guy told me 1700$ for the rust on the car of course not the engine swap!! And He took the time to show me the parts and the way he works he cuts everything rusted and stick (no welding?) Pre-made quarter panel/rocker panel With body cocking or some kind of glue that is supposingly better than welding the part..? ..but I dont wanna pay for a shitty job .. ill probably leave the wrx as it is now and do general maintenance on it until it knock to death..like every subaru.. I'm very dissapointed about subaru and rust.. not as bad as mazda but in the same range .. and will go with a clean mk4/mk5 GTI/GLI ..I hate rust!!!!!!

My worst fear are too miss the Awd during winter and being dissapointed by a stg 2 unitronic vw power.. even if the wrx makes 225hp only..

You are going to miss the awd.. trust me.
I used to have a 02 wrx, i tried my friend's 2010 vw gti..if you step on the gas the traction control comes in and you re going nowhere (unless you re on the highway of course), but you are going to miss the fun you have in first and 2nd gear with the wrx.
Maybe you can sell it, take the money + your budget for what you wanted to fix and try to find one that is in better shape :dunno:

If you are happy with your WRX maybe you should sell it and then take the 6000+sale money and get a better WRX, trading an AWD WRX for a FWD VW seems like an awful deal to me.

instead of putting 5000 $ in the car and selling it for 6000 after. Just sell it right now for 2000 $ It will sell in a day or two.

Doesn't make sense at all. Trading your 2002 wrx for a MKIV (1998 to 2005). You might endup with a beatup MKIV with identical problem that you have now with the subi.

You should take care of the rust and swap the engine or simply sell yours and get another 2004-2005. Like it was said you'll miss your awd car when the first snow it us next winter.

Coming from a vw guy that has owned a gti and wrx before, I say hands down the wrx is way more fun to drive (summer and snow). If you buy it and it's your first VW, I just warn you that maintenance is key. Subaru's don't need alot of maintenance from my experience compared to when I had a gti. Parts are more expensive for the vw's too. But I give it to the gti/gli that its a much more solid car with a nicer interior.

I would sell your wrx and take your 5000$ extra and find a better wrx though.
