I will not get into this debate with yet another MR member, I despise SUV's and the uselessness they represent.
And yes, the BMW X3/X5/X6 are ugly vehicles from a pure design standpoint.

I have to disagree. What makes SUV's useless? They are usually bigger than most hatchback/sedan cars, they usually tow heavier and are usually better in mud/snow. If a car is too small for your needs and you can't afford a huge pickup/truck, a small SUV's is the way to go.

A range rover also costs nearly twice as much as an X5.... 61k vs 114k.... its like comparing a hyundai elantra to a 3 series or an A4.

In montreal I have NO CHOICE to drive suv over my car 90% of the time because of: cargo space, tow capacity, ride height (hauling seadoo/dirt bike trailer) suspension travel and tire size (shitty montreal roads)
So yes, maybe the SUV is completely useless to YOU but that a subjective opinion, Id really like to see a vehicle that is more practical than my Jeep GC diesel that does better fuel econo than my Honda (no really, im on the market for another truck)

There are exceptions and you are one of them. Obviously if you have to tow you have to get a real SUV or pick-up. However, in 98% of cases people don't tow shit. Take for example my neighbourhood, the amount of luxury suv's is staggering, mostly driven by women who can barely see over the hood. They are carrying grocery bags, shopping bags and 2 kids at most. Total waste...

Problem is im becoming accustomed to driving the truck even on days I don't have to.. I think im turning into a soccer mom 
And yes, CRD benz motor is bullet proof. Total shame its gone. New 3.0 diesel GC is back but from VM motori (same makers as Liberty engines) but we gonna have to see how good it is. Personally im waiting for a diesel wrangler (hopefully 2015)

The trick is to look like you just arrived from a construction site or outdoor activity and not fancy metrosexual trousers & attire.
Yes, soccer mom's have traded their minivans for SUV's...makes them feel younger I guess. There are two types, the mom who shows up at the soccer field with high heels, makeup, trendy clothes and coiffe who never pays attention to their kid(s) while chatting away on their phone (the husband is probably with the mistress). And you have the counterpart who shows up in jogging pants weighing in at a solid 200+ pounds. They all drive the same category SUV. I should snap a picture one night and post it.

I see what OP is saying, in some cases the "people" he's describing would not drive up on a curb thinking they'll hurt their SUV lol.
Wife traded in 3 series for an X5 with M wheel package. Not only is it mean looking but in terms of getting our kid in and out and carrying strollers, toys, and whatever other junk we may have with us, its great for the space...I actually suggested the 5 series sedan but she thought it was a boat, oh wells.
